Abstract sculpture, trash or treasure?

I found this ceramic abstract sculpture at our local dump a few years ago in the swap 'n shop room. The base had broken off, so I made a new wooden base and glued it on. Does it look like a student piece in the style of Henry Moore? It is signed with the letter "D" on the bottom, so somebody was proud enough to have signed it. It is 9 1/2" tall (plus the wooden stand). Is it trash or treasure?

 

New England, I would like to know why you "liked" it enough to bring it home from the dump and do some work on.

In other words, what attracted you to it in the first place?

 

I admire that modernist abstract style - although I live in an antique home, and tend to decorate with ‘old’ rather than ‘new’ things. So here it sits, out of place, but happy. I also like to fix broken things.

 

Is it ceramic or chalkware?
Can you show a close up of the signature?
Biomorphic is a good term for this.

 

It does look there could be more to the signature than just D. It also look like it's crazed so I'd think it's ceramic.

Yes, there is crazing and the D is the only letter that I can see. There may have been more letters after that, but they are faint and illegible.

It’s heavy with a hi-gloss glaze. Before I glued it to the wooden base, I could see inside and it’s white pottery.

 

I thought it looked like it was inspired by Henry Moore as well.

(As an aside, that photo looks like one I've seen on a Facebook page called Dirty Old Boston. The picture I'm currently using as an avatar is me on Mission Hill in 1972)

 

That’s a photo of my father (Boston Police) and my two older siblings, circa 1952, in Dorchester, right outside Codman Square. Those old 3 deckers housed many families post WWII. We lived in the middle apartment. I still have my father’s old police hat and badge.

I am not on facebook, so I haven’t seen Dirty Old Boston, but I suppose there were many families with similar photos!

 

What a nice photo of three adorable children with their favorite policeman (their father) standing by them.

 

I owned a three decker on Mission Hill for ten years and found the site by accident. There's another one specifically for Mission Hill. It's fun to look at the old photos. I liked Boston better back then when it was all families and not gentrified.

 

I hardly know the City any more. I've had to drive in to the City a few times to visit relatives at Beth Israel and MGH, and got lost. I used to know the City so well! I prefer country living now. No traffic and no noise.
