Double headed eagle large cast seal. What do we have here?

Russian coat of arms/Byzantine double eagle seal interpretation. Found this for sale somewhere close by. 16” diameter. Looks brass or bronze maybe? Or is it cast iron? Not sure if it was embedded in a wall or a grate on the floor or what!? Any ideas on what this was?! If so any guesses as to value? It’s pretty cool and I’m looking for a reason to buy it lol.

 

See if a magnet sticks for cast iron. If not, then make a small scratch somewhere inconspicuous - if yellowish then it's bronze/brass,

Whole thing looks like painted cast iron, to me.

Blue-green patina says to me that copper is present so I'm saying bronze.

 

That was my thought but antidiem thinks it may be painted.

It was not that long ago that the Russian owned estate in NY was shut down I believe by our government. I recall seeing similar gates years ago there.

 

It may not be steel, I'm not stuck on steel!

 

What an interesting story. Never knew about this one! I can’t find photos of those gates unfortunately . It sounds like they probably didn’t tear that place apart from the older stories I read. It could have happened since then but an old story I read said they still belonged to Russia and may even be opened back up to them at some point. Here’s a photo of the gates from a similar estate they own in Maryland. Edit: spelling.

Thanks, JDagger, and now I'm inclined to believe the center part of it is surely not steel, and that it is most likely part of an old gate. It's very interesting too.

 

Thanks for getting the ball rolling. The eagles may not be but the ring around the outside looks like it is. You had part of it either way! Now I have to wonder what kind of value if any this may have.
