I'm guessing this piece dates from the 1930s - he is marked MADE IN JAPAN on the bottom. Is this Banko Ware? From what I've found, a lot of people online refer to these as Banko nodders, but I'm unclear whether they are referring to a specific maker, or are referring to the type of pottery.

He is holding what looks to be a fan. Is that a symbol of his profession?

Can anyone tell me something about this guy?

The fan itself is a symbol of prosperity according to the following.

"The fan itself is the symbol of prosperity as it spreads out when we open it. As the fan starts from a single point and the wooden strips go out to various directions, they are considered to resemble the various paths leading us through life after the single point of birth."

I suspect this is suppose to represent a prosperous man. Gee, the clothing with those shoulders reminds me of that hilarious Carol Burnett episode doing Scarlett O'Hara in the dress made from the curtains, Gone with the Wind.

    Thanks for those links Susan.

Komo - why do you say nobleman?

Susan - that was a hilarious skit. :)

Classic Carol Burnett. Loved that show as a kid, I've seen many of the skits more recently, and they still hold up.

Golly gee, wish I could say I saw it as a kid. :arghh: It aired in 1976. I laughed so hard that tears were rolling down my face. If I saw it for the *first* time today, I would have to change my pants or wear Depends, seniors' diapers!

Japanese Shows Their Family Crest on the Kimono
The modern full dress Kimono for both male and female have a crest. Generally, the family crest is used for the crest, but there are other crests called 'Kagamon' and 'Sharemon.' A crest is usually provided in white on Kimono as big as contained in a circle 2 cm to 4 cm across. A crest is provided on Kimono at one, three, or five places, according to the kind and purpose of Kimono. Kimono having a crest at the five places called 'Itsutsumon' is the most formal. Places for the crest depends upon the number of places. The formal crest is the resist-dyed crest called 'Somenuki hinatamon' that is represented by white and the base color of kimono, which is usually provided on a resist-dyed crest place called 'Kokumochi' by dyeing the crest with the base color of kimono afterwards.

Thanks komo!!! That's great information. The fan the man is holding in the last photo looks just like the one my nodder is holding.

Yup, it's a very traditional look.

    On another note...

That kimono style always reminds me of Paul Kirk...Manhunter !
