Fan Identification

I have a fan which I have been trying to identify. The best I have come up with is that it is Meji period. I would like to know the type of fan, and any other information anyone may be able to provide. Thank you

Welcome to the board. It is best if you resize your photos of this fan and post them here. Most of the members will NOT click on a website since terrible things have happened. I am not saying that you have a problem but being new it helps if you can fulfill some of our requests.

Gorgeous fan. It is of the type used in Noh drama, and might be older than you think, possibly Tokugawa.
Noh is the more formal traditional Japanese theatre, with a lot of symbolism. The stage is dark and austere, but the costumes are flamboyant. Noh fans are usually painted on a gold ground, like the pretty souvenir fans you see nowadays. Your fan would have been much brighter in its day.
The scene looks like pine trees by a stream under the moonlight. All these things would be important to the symbolism of the play. I am no expert on Noh drama, but if you could find one, he/she could help you. Keep us posted.

 

Hi Thank you so much for the information. That really gives me a good place to start. And I really appreciate you telling me about the Japanese theater, very interesting. You say you are no expert, but clearly you do know quite a bit about the Noh drama. I will certainly keep you posted on what more I am able to find out.
