It's stapled to me now!. Can't think how I got to this age without realising the joy of a UV light and a dark closet. Small pleasures.

For a not-a-jewelry person like me....what am I looking at?

They are very pretty too! KSW, what type of UV light did you get?
I have read that a simple black light bulb is not the right type, but it is said not to look at UV light with the naked eyes? I have no idea, but I'd enjoy to huddle in my dark closet to check out everything glassy too! I know I would never be able to not look at the UV light, we loved looking at them with the posters in the early 1970s...

Boring brown beads suddenly become something else!
I've got one like this. Cheap and cheerful, not very strong so I don't think too much of a problem as long as you don't shine it directly into your eyes.
@Any Jewelry , I think we have snagged a convert, is there room in the closet for one more?

Thank you so much, KSW, I would never have found a battery flashlight model to take to go, without your help! And they are calling it a "money checker" lol Thanks!

Just a question. When looking at repaired ceramics under UV light, modern repairs glow due to, I believe, some plastics/glues used. Are there similar issues in jewelry?

    Hi,
When I got my first black light I waited until dark and turned off all the lights. The I walked around my house shining the light around at things. It was amazing what you will find.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I have the 21 LED version. Great tool. I use it to detect repairs/restorations and to check whether my own restorations are detectable under blacklight. I also used it once to rebuild the A/C system in my old Jaguar!

Some does, but genuine amber can also fluoresce yellow with a slight greenish tinge, a slight fuchsia pink 'veil', blue, and even white.
I know the colour in natural light has something to do with it, as does the mixing in of charcoal from burnt trees, etc. For instance dark brown amber often fluoresces blue, especially Sumatran brown amber:

    AJ, you're so kind! :joyful::kiss:

I love it, and will look for the 21 LED model too, KSW, I know I would not be misled here, except by my own self! ;)

Excellent question, following, I'd forgotten one could see glue repairs too, thanks for the reminder, SIS. :singing:

I HAD NO IDEA!! Thanks, Kathleen!

I can't wait to do this!! Thanks, Greg! :hungover::hilarious::happy::happy::happy:

OMGosh, Blooey, you crack me up! I know this is the truth too! ;) So it will identify refrigerant leaks too? ;) :playful:

I HAVE A COUPLE TO TRY OUT WITH THIS!! Thanks, Kyra :singing::shame:

Thanks, AJ, that's very interesting. IF I EVER THINK I may have found amber ANYTHING, I will want to bring it here for further identification. Thank you so much for pointing this out!

Members are a wealth of knowledge, thank you all so much!
I'm off to order one...!!! :cat::cat:

@antidiem Yes, refrigerant usually has dye added and when it leaks ...glow little glow leak, glimmer, glimmer :woot:
