Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Hi all, my BiL handed me this to see what you thought of this....overall outside OD is 4" and put together, it's kind of heavy. I didn't recommend polishing until running it by you...the top piece looks like it was well used as an ash tray so not sure how well it would polish anyway. The silver pattern (not marked...just going by the included little newspaper clipping that was with it) repeats just three times around. The stamp is from the very bottom. And that's all I know about it in a nutshell!!! If anyone can expound upon it, all info happily received so I can pass it back to my BiL!!! As always, Thank you VERY MUCH!!!:):):) I guess he'd really like to know if these things are collectible and should he go ahead and polish the bejekkers out of it!!!!???? TY again!!!

Don't think polishing is recommended but wait for others. Maybe touch up the sterling? No, wait for others to say...

I posted, and THEN went looking, I think they polish the SILVER components, from what I see, but mostly NOT the bronze!!! ALSO found a COLLECTOR's website......NICE stuff he has!!!! DID NOT KNOW it was collectible, at all!!!! BiL will be happy!!! Here's the website......and thanks to you @Happy! and @916Bulldogs123!!!

I think I remember reading that there’s some type of overcoat sealant, not to polish. I think @verybrad will know.

Polish the silver carefully but not the bronze. The bronze has an applied patina that you do not want to polish off.

    Sunshine Cloth on the silver.

@i need help was right....recommended to NOT polish the silver as it supposedly 'has the very best coat of lacquer', but these were so badly tarnished....I did just a little cleaning....not much and it helped...a bit, and didn't touch the bronze. The sunshine cloth is a good idea though!

If silver is tarnished, there is no intact coat of lacquer on it. Either it was incomplete, deteriorated over time, or was previously removed.

There are no indentations for cigarettes so I'm not convinced this was an ashtray just because someone thought it was. I'd say planter

It's a nested set of ashtrays (there should be one more piece) - more common than not for ashtrays/ash receivers of the period to be without notches for cigarettes or cigars...
