Body is forged steel, way thicker than even the heavy duty metalworking clamps. The shaft is only threaded for a couple inches inside the top of the body, so the total range of shaft motion is less than a C clamp with fully- threaded shaft. Mr. Google doesn't seem to have pix of this. Maybe get pix later, this got stored high up before I thought to take pic. Came in a load of machine shop stuff.

A crude press for pressing bearings etc. Not rare.

It might do nicely for clamping down on internet trolls.

Turns out this design is one of the few standard designs for welding clamps that hold together or hold down metal to be welded. Expansion when heated is one issue with electric welding. So heavy clamps at certain points will help.

    Another brand, same design.

We bought these, used, for various needs around the company machine shop, and paid about 1/6 the cost of new ones.

I've worked in shops that had these and we never used them for clamping to weld. We used this and the lever type for pressing/fitting things.
What was nice about this one was if the part wasn't cooperating you could leave it and come back to find it partially set.

Thanks, glad to know that, there's an advantage in using these over a manual arbor press then, hadn't thought of that.

Here's the stuff the clamps were in-a collection of all sorts of machine shop items we thought we could use, bought from 4 or 5 different places across the Midwest during a recent trip. For scale the round lathe Chuck in upper left is 15" diameter. We needed a 4-jaw Chuck and this vintage heavy one was offered to us for $50 and we couldn't refuse-most places want $650 or so.
