    Hello,

I have some things that need identifying and thought I would join this site. It is interesting to read peoples comments. I am thinking about going on the road, so trying to get organized is a little daunting.

To start, I have a bedroom set from my Great Aunt who lived in NYC from 1880-1960. Of particular interest are the nice drawer details of the set, the shape of each piece and lovely Shell Motif, which I have never seen elsewhere.

    The set includes six pieces:
A Vanity, Dresser, Two Different Nightstands, Queen Headboard and Tall Chest of Drawers. All pieces are original vintage except the Headboard, which is Cherry and which was added later. So, I don't need any help on that one piece.

Anyway, I don't know the make, style, wood or value of the set. Nor do I know if it is antique. So, I hope you might want to help. I am not sure how to add pictures and I don't store pictures online. So, I will add a link to my listing on this furniture, where I price it out of the park until I know what I have. This way, if my pictures don't attach here, you can take a look there.

I am starting with some general pictures for now and will add more detailed ones in a day or so.

Unfortunately, because you are shooting into a lighted room with a lot of white/cream the camera is adjusting to the brightness and darkening the furniture.

You will need to take a picture closer to each piece showing a little better detail.

As an observation, I think the style will date to the 1930s.

    Hi,

Oh gosh. Since taking the pictures, we filled the room with storage because we sold one of our homes. I may be able to get to a drawer or two, which is what I expected to do. But, the path into the room is about two feet wide! I'll see what I can do.

In the meantime, thank you for your help and advise.

    I'm not the furniture expert.
Check back again tomorrow evening to see if Brad or others have given a little better insight into your furniture.

1940s traditional mahogany. Sheraton in style for the most part.

Interestingly, when I went to find an example of a Sheraton chest, a lot of Federal period chests popped up. Here is a nice period Sheraton chest that is most similar to your set.

    Hello,

    Nice work. Thank you.

I just squeezed into the room to get a few more pictures. The finish seems to me to have something on it like a shellac. The drawers are dovetail, the chair has a lyre of sorts on the back (but I couldn't get to it) and the shell seems to be done by hand or perhaps a stencil.

I will add the newer pictures in a while. I just tried and the files are too big.

    Hi everyone,

I am back with more the pictures. They aren't great, but I still hope they will help.

Like I said earlier, "The finish seems to me to have something on it like a shellac. The drawers are dovetail, the chair has a lyre of sorts on the back (but I couldn't get to it) and the shell seems to be done by hand or perhaps a stencil."

    Thanks for your interest.

    Hi,

Nice to hear from you again.

Yes, I saw that Brad had posted. Very helpful. But, I actually thought he was making a starting suggestion, not a decision. So, I will have to get back to him.

Of interest was that he mentioned FEDERAL and that is what my Aunt said something about before she passed away. Only, I didn't know what it meant. I thought she was speaking of another set.

As for the SHELL, I didn't realize it was inlay. I only know I have never seen it before. Have you? And, I wonder who the maker was.

On the chair, I am referring to the small VANITY CHAIR in the first set of pictures. I am sorry it is such a poor picture. I did cut just that part out and am posting it here. I am also posting a slight enlargement that is blurry, but helps you see the shape more. And, I am posting a spotlight of the chair back, though it is still dark.

Maybe it is not a LYRE. Maybe something else? Let me know what you think.

Anyway, glad you are home and hope you have a good night.

    Mike

I'm sorry, I can hardly see the back. I'm afraid at this point I'm tired and my brain is not working to full capacity. And I am trying to type over two cats who are laying directly in front of the keyboard. Will have to take a better look in the morning.

Did you by chance look in all the drawers?
Some times the better furniture makers imprinted/burned their name or logo in a top drawer.
Also look on the underside of the seat of the chair for a name.

    Hi Brad,

I am back to you on your reply. I found it very helpful. Were making a starting suggestion or a decision on this furniture? I am asking because you mentioned FEDERAL pieces popping up and my Aunt said something about FEDERAL before she passed away. Only, I didn't know what it meant. I thought she was speaking of another set.

Anyway, I posted more pictures and would like to find more example or information on the SHELL motif, confirm the wood, be more certain of age, understand the shellac (if possible) and get a sense of any possible value.

In the meantime, I assume the furniture was purchased in the US and possible in NYC where my Aunt lived. Though, she did previously live in STONEHAM, MA and all the family members immigrated here from ITALY, ENGLAND and IRELAND.

Don't know what else I can say on this, but I am enjoying the help and learning.

    Hi,

LOL on the cats! Love the creatures! Ours stands next the my desk lamp with his head under the shade while I work. He likes to grab my hand while I am working; the rascal! He also likes to follow us around! And, if I run, he goes nuts and starts to play tag! I tap his nose and run and he catches me. He taps my foot and runs and so on! If it is not one of the shenanigans, he is pulling my neatly folded socks just after I fold them, over his head for a warm nap! LOL!

Anyway, take a look when you can and get good sleep for now. Thank you for the heads up on searching through the pieces for a possible maker. Great idea!

    Thank you again.
