    Hi All
This bust is probably from Germany from the 18th century . Any ideas about the strange carvings on it?

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

I really want to see the last four 'letters' as "ERIS".

    EDIT
MAERIS is apparently a name... not sure of origin or distribution.

In my opinion it is 20th C. The base lettering, assuming the base is original, is not remotely 18th C, and the general style looks 20th C. to me.

It has an informality that I do not associate with the age of Robert Adam.

PS, always select 'full image' thunbs are a bit of a pain.

Also believe 18th century dating is extremely unlikely - suppose it might be late 19th, but would guess more likely somewhere around the 1920s. Perhaps Egyptian King Maeris?

Might be helpful to see more pics...

Again, better pictures would be helpful - personally, from what you've shown and said, can't tell what it's made of, or even if it represents a woman or romanticized man, and it's always nice to know the size...

    She looks more 1920s than 1820s .

Orientalist bust of a woman. Would think late 19 to early 20th century. Writing is supposed to mimic Arabic but does look like it spells a western name. Agree, Maeris.

When talking to people about dates I've found that people often mis-speak. Often people say 19th Century when they mean 1900's (which of course is 20th Century). I find that people are often off by 100+ years in what they say especially if they don't often deal with really old things.

If someone says 18th Century I will often say something like "so 1750 or so?".

You are right...in this case she used the word " oito" ( to mean eight) and something with it and I took it as eighteen century but she may be referring a year in 1800s which is nineteen century...

Continue to be puzzled by this piece, in lieu of any further pics or information, can only guess based on the chipped corner that it's painted plaster. The subject appears to be a strong featured dark-skinned woman, but perhaps it's just the angle, the chest seems flat and the shoulder muscular, with the diadem and strap across the chest reminding me of classical Greek. Searching the name 'MAERIS' (if correct) brings up an ancient Egyptian king, and a minor male character in Virgil's Eclogues...

A quick search finds a somewhat similar piece of a dark skinned woman, 10" tall, which appears to be titled 'BOHEM'DIXE', searching that and similar words brings up little other than that she's Bohemian. Another piece along similar lines, 20" tall, is much more clear in being 'HIAWATHA', though a somewhat light-skinned depiction...
