Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I agree with Susan -- especially about the hair. Jiggs Donahue's hair looked very straight, not wavy or curly. By the way, the baseball player's last name is spelled Donahue, not Donohue. Not that it matters. The writing on the back of the photo is probably not a signature, as most people who were well known signed photos on the front.

Too bad about Jiggs, as he died at age 34 of mental illness probably caused by syphilis.

Here is a site that shows drawings of Chicago White Stockings/Sox uniforms through history:

Obviously, whoever wrote that was a big Sox fan, as can be noticed by the derogatory language about the Cubs!

The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th photos most likely date from the late 1890s to very early 1900s. That is when those types of card mounts were most often used.

The 5th pic of a soldier/officer says "Sholfield Bros. Westerly, R.I." on the bottom. The studio name is really spelt Scholfield. Either their name was misspelled on this CDV or they they changed the spelling of their surname. I found several CDV be Scholfield online. Some say E.A. Scholfield of Westerly, RI, E.A. Scholfield of Mystic River, Scholfield Bros. of Westerly, RI, etc.... Mystic, CT and Westerly, RI are a few miles apart. The CDVs by Scholfield are being dated "Civil War Era." Following are examples:

    Scholfield of Westerly, RI

    Scholfield Bros of Westerly, RI:

    Scholfield Bros. of Mystic.

Hold the phone!!! Found info on dating your Scholfield Bros. CDV, at least the earliest it could be? E.A. (Everett) Scholfield returned from the West Indies in January 1879 to set up a studio with his brothers as Scholfield Bros. in Westerly, RI. This partnership lasted until 1885.

"... In 1877-1878 Scholfield traveled for a second time to the West Indies, while his brother Addison continued the established business in Mystic. Everett returned in the summer of 1878, after unsuccessful business attempts in St. Croix, and in poor health.

The following January, Everett and Addison established "Scholfield Brothers" at 30 Main Street in Westerly, Rhode Island, to which brother Edwin D. was added in 1881. Everett spent June and July of that year on a mining investment venture in Honduras.

By January 1885 Everett had severed his association with Scholfield Brothers and George E. Tingley entered a one year apprenticeship at the Mystic studio. ..."

Now Scholfield Bros. was formed in Jan. 1879. Everett pulled out in 1885. The other 2 brothers probably carried on the partnership???

Fig, it looks as if it was spelled both ways. These cards both had the "o":

I'm certainly not saying Kraft's photo IS of Donohue/Donahue, but it would be neat if it were!

Also, as an aside for moreotherstuff: does the glove on the right hand in the 2nd card photo above indicate that the guy was a leftie?

Yes, people misspell names all the time -- that includes on baseball cards. I don't know how he himself spelled it, but most sites that are authoritative spell it with the "a."

I had this bright idea that it might be a minor league player. so thought that I would try to find teams that started with a "C" or "S" combined with "W" as that is what I see on the shirt of the baseball photo.

I had no idea how many baseball teams there were in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
These are the leagues, if you click on a league it gives you the year and the names of all the teams. I was concentrating on 1904- 1910 with no luck.

There are so many I finally gave up.
Some of the team names for the early years are a hoot.

Yeah I am familiar with that site since I come across some cards now and then. I don't think I will ever find out who he is. But I am not complaining.

I thought maybe you could contact the Baseball Hall of Fame's Research Center, but it does appear that they charge a fee to do research for others. You may not want to do that. http://www.baseballhall.org/learn/research

Also, they have digitized some photos from their collection, but have even more that are not, it sounds like:
    http://www.baseballhall.org/archive-collection/photo

If this might possibly be a significant photo it might be worth looking further. I'm not sure that it is, but you never know!

By the way, years ago I paid an independent researcher to go to the Hall of Fame to research one of my grandfather's cousins who played in the minor leagues in the early 20th century. The researcher found out his minor league teams and the dates he had played, among other things. I never followed up with some newspaper research. I was going to do that but haven't gotten around to it. Another project!

It's always good to be able to determine when to let the research go. That was something I learned in a graduate library science program. I did a ton of research on a particular question for a class, and learned that the solution was that if there is no way of finding anything definitive on a certain set of books, that means the set was not important in the corpus of the author's works. -- Doesn't completely apply to your topic, except the part about knowing how far to go.

It could also just be a local team and not a famous team. Are you sure that's a Chicago logo?
