Wild guess... Some kind of scoring tool.

What did your friend's Dad do for a living? Could this be a tool of his trade? Or a tool for a spare time hobby?

 

Not sure I can wait that long to find out!

Sure wish we had it to play with a bit.

 

He was a flea marketer and sold all kinds of old tools

 

There are some good tool auctions out there.....find one and see if they might have an answer.

 

I sent pic to friend who should know, if more than a few of these were produced. Should have his answer in a few days.

 

I sent it to my expert as well. Says he's sending it on to his experts.

Got this one a month ago at the auction for a longtime collector/trader. Helpfully labelled "Gizmo."









I loosened the bottom screw, Applied downward pressure to the wooden handle to allow the tip to escape the socket in the cast iron tip. The other is a socket that engages a domed pin captive in a spring. The part inside the bore looks like wood. The hex shaft shows a wrenching smudge.

Still no clue.....
