I scored this little beauty for almost nothing at a small household estate auction. There are a couple small places where it looks like the paint wants to come off. The painting is no longer attached to the frame, it's just sitting in it. IMG_20160709_074945598~01.jpg IMG_20160709_074957910~01.jpg [ IMG_20160709_075022894~01.jpg
I'm looking for a value on this. I love the colors. Please and thanks!

Very Chagall , I love it ! I looked up Frank ( drummond ) Allison , and this seems very different from his work I see online ? The colors are right , but the actual painting seems less skilled than what I see ? That , plus he died in 1951 and that canvas looks awfully fresh for a 60+ year old painting . When I saw it I immediately thought it was by Fournier , so I was surprised it wasnt .

Are you sure this is the same guy, Johnny? The bio snippet says he was born in 1929, making him only 22? if he died in 1951?

I'm not seeing any similarity between identified Frank Allison paintings and this one. It says simply Allison and someone stuck that clipping on the back, but I would want verification it's actually his. I agree this style is 1960s-70s and the colors are modern. I just don't see it.

    Very influenced by Raoul Dufy.

    Johnny (and others)...
As for the marked-out thing, why is the name Allison printed next to it? As for the mystery word itself, I guess I see "OAPE", at the end, maybe. Maybe "IM/NA" towards the front? What word or name looks anything like that???

Thank you everyone, interesting. Here is a close-up of the crossed out word. It does look like OGAPE at the end. IMG_20160709_215137875~01.jpg

Something-scape? Landscape? OMG. Look at the underlying paintbrush marks. Do you think someone took a real Allison, painted over it and put this on top and then just signed it Allison? That would be awful.

You need one of those machines that x-ray paintings to see if there are underlying paintings.

The more I look at this painting, the weirder it looks. See how the "brush" marks are on top of the whole scene and cross the various colors without moving the paint? I can't wrap my head around how this was done - much less why. Swirling wind effect?

See my suggestion that an older painting underneath was painted over and then this image painted on top would cover that anomaly.

Hadn't thought of the brush marks being underneath the paint. Thanks, Bev.

I've seen a bunch of old canvases that were painted white and reused. One hopes it was done with valueless amateur art - I've painted over some of my own work when it didn't turn out well. However, it's not unknown for someone to paint over a valuable piece. I'd peel off that masking tape and look carefully at the edges to see if there's any hint of a painting under the painting.

    I second that, Bev!

It looks like the canvas was prepared with a heavily textured ground and then very liquid colors were applied like a wash on top. My vote is for factory painting albeit of slightly better than average quality and inspiration.

Brush-mark mysteries and all, I really like it. It's just vey light, playful, sort of dreamy. It would be fun to play with that style... very heavy brush textures, then a light-hearted scene over it. You first, Bev!
