    Hi,
Here is another piece I need help with. This is a ladle with a bone handle, has 2 marks on the outside. A horse over the letter S and what looks like maybe a pair of cursive L.
Sorry, I didn't take a photo of the inside of the bowl, looks like it had a gold wash at some point in time. Also has a notched or zipper pattern part way around the outside of the bowl. This is 8" in length, the bowl is about 4".
I thought the horse mark would be easy to find but nothing is coming up.
    any information appreciated
    thanks for looking

Thank-you bakers:) you have once again solved the mystery for me!! So with the letter S, does this mean it is silver rather than plate? Off to poke around

Not sure what I have done to change the font size

Not S for silver, but S for that assayer who made that zigzag in the assay process. ;)

So that is what that zig zag mark is, thanks again bakers. So this mark was used before 1886, and the other mark is the silver purity? Maybe not a cursive L

I just saw on another site that the letter under the horse is the date letter

Is this another mark? On the back of where the handle attaches to the ladel bowl.

If it is silver the handle would be more likely to be ivory.

It doesn't look clean enough for ivory.

cx probably knows about schreger lines, so it is probably bone.

I can't see that as any of the Lot numbers, although some I have seen in the past didn't look like numbers either at first. ;) One of those optical puzzles - is this an urn or 2 faces nose-to-nose?

If no one has offered a possible value on an item in a thread that is almost 3 years old.......... it's likely not coming any time soon....;)
