Wondering what I have if anything. Nice carved wood piece made into coat hanger.

And darn you, AJ - I have stuff to do and and you mentioned a name that's sending me to my favorite jewelry site to drool over pieces well beyond my budget...

Exactly. Suggesting it came over centuries ago is just that, a suggestion.
We have no proof when it came over, Frisians have been emigrating to North America ever since the 17th century, and are still doing it.
Why, even an American collector or investor could have bought it in the 19th or 20th century.

We can have our fantasies about its history, but even the poster on CW has no idea of its provenance. We just don't know when it came to the US.

    To quote the owner:
"My best guess goes something like this. I believe this to have been an early spoon rack. There are some similar examples found in Wallace Nutting's, "Furniture Treasury," Plates 4981-4992. In his description he talks about the spoon racks being found in Hackensack, NJ. A town very near to where I discovered this piece."

Guessing and believing are no provenance.;)

I don't doubt it! It's her BDAY so she's probably trying to lure hubby into buying a very expensive gift! with a line that goes something like "all the ladies are shopping here now!" So, the more the merrier! :)

    "Make an Enquiry"
Let me translate that, "if you have to ask, you can't afford it!"

    1st- I'm not like that
2nd- I don't lie, not to my husband, nor to anyone else
    3rd- I wasn't born in the 1850s but in the 1950s
4th- I buy my own jewellery, from my own money
5th- I have never bought anything from the Tadema gallery and it is unlikely I ever will. Enjoying looking at it and wanting to own it are two very different things.
6th- My husband rarely remembers my birthday, and his mind only recently recovered enough to think of buying me flowers, even if it is not on my birthday. And no, I don't sit around expecting flowers, I usually buy him flowers.

Wow. This thread has gone a lot of places since I last checked in. It would take me 15 mins to like all comments so “like” to all. Happy Birthday AJ!

I think the conversion while poorly executed was a valiant effort to match the style and color as close as the individuals capabilities would allow. I think the initial job may not have been been so horrid. It was like the pegs fit right and right into the holes they made with glue or screw. My guess is that over time and putting heavy garments on the hooks that the holes grew a touch and the legs loosened. Maybe one garment was so heavy and pulled so much it cracked the wood? Then again maybe it happens during the conversion. I’m pretty sure the glue and screws didn’t come until later when it needed shoring up though. Just how I see it, I could be wrong. The brass hardware while much less invasive and safer doesn’t look good to me. Not that my hooks look good but I see what they were going for and respect the effort.

Well to me, THAT was their first mistake, obviously the Witch was having an off day when that took place.
To drill large holes in an early carving like that kinda kills the whole deal for most collectors, OTOH, to attach brass or iron brackets to fragment would have been best outcome in my view.

I don't doubt it, not even a little bit.

Agreed whole heartedly. I don’t think the witch was concerned with the collector/ antique market though based on what I’m seeing. They probably really needed a coat hanger and happened to have this old thing laying around which was pretty enough to have on the wall. This is what I’m imagining at least. Good for conservation no, good for their purpose yes.
