The taste for apple-red cheeks comes and goes. Take a look at Pinky... she looks fevered.

Hi Moreo...Have just managed to send you those latest "Unshaked" Photos I hope...Yes you are right ,It does look that the painting..On Canvas or Paper has been stuck and even nailed on an other Canvas..But even the base canvas looks old enough...Very strange for me..Why..?? Have been allowed to take some photos of the painting out of the frame...Still very strange...Looking ok but fragile I think this painting deserves some minor restauration....Please told me what you think..?? have not received any feed back on Period Clothes..?? Behind on frame in very light shalk writing..Think is more Pendarren..AC..?? Please forward me your thoughts on this painting...As I have already made and offer for Ring and Hearings..Will do same amount offer...It works ok..No..Tough luck..Hope not for me..JCK 011.JPG 022.JPG 013.JPG 014.JPG 015.JPG 016.JPG 017.JPG 018.JPG 019.JPG 018.JPG 019.JPG 020.JPG

The second canvas might mean that the painting has been relined, which means that someone took a deteriorated old canvas and stuck it onto a new canvas to strengthen it.

The colors are certainly different in these photos.

I don't have much more to add.

Recently, on the Antiques Roadshow, someone showed a 19th C portrait of a woman. It was oil on canvas and looked like competent work to me, but it was anonymous. I was surprised when the appraiser gave it a valuation of $100-$200. I would have thought it was worth more, but there you have it.

If you like it for itself, it will look good with a nice frame, but if you want it for resale, I doubt there's any room for profit.

    kyratango Bug jewellery addiction!

I love him! Agree with the era first years of 1800s, not a specialist in paintings, but seems in fine enough condition ( just to say I wouldn't add pricey restoration on it if it was mine)

Your picture has been relined. No big deal, most paintings of that age have had some resto, a reline is very common.
More interesting, (on a personal level) is the chalk mark "pendarren".

As chance would have it, I was born and educated very near Pendarren, or as it is more properly written, "Pen-y-Darren". Penydarren began as a Roman settlement but toward the end of the 18thc was one of the birthplaces of the Industrial revolution. The very first railway EVER built began in Penydarren.

The Ironmaster Samuel Hofray had a bet with another industrialist, Richard Crawshay of Cyfarthfa, that he could transport his iron and steel faster than by canal (he built a railroad) and with the proceeds of the bet, built Penydarren House on the site of the old Roman fort.

from the Wikipedia article on Penydarren house:

"sufficiently removed from the town by the extent of the pleasure grounds, and contains all the conveniences and the luxuries requisite for a family of wealth and importance, Homfray was waited on by servants who were dressed in a scarlet and buff livery, while he was driven everywhere in a coach and four horses"

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penydarren

If you do buy the portrait, it might be worth contacting the curator of the Cyfarthfa Castle museum in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales (my old school) to ask if they have any portraits in the collection that match the boy in your painting.
