    Hi everyone,

I picked up this painting at a second hand store. It needs some repairing. I'm not sure the costs of it will pay up in the end. I'm not an expert and don 't know of it has quality.... Also the painters autograph is unknown for me.... As I can see, the canvas is attached to an other and there is a lot of varnish used.

    Thanks in advance!

I tweaked the signature a bit, don't know if it helps:

I wouldn't bother. It might be a Finland artist by the name Antti Vanninen (1890 - 1985) but there are no works/values in regards to this artist.

The date looks like 78 to me, as in 1878, but I could be wrong.

Thanks for the input! I also think dat is 78 or 76. Propably 1876 or 1878 I think.

Beside the date or artist. Is it well made?

    Thanks a lot

To me the proportions of the woman are very strange unless she is wearing an empire waist dress or she is extremely short waisted. No attention was paid to her shoes, while her other clothing has some details. The set of steps hanging in space also gives me pause. The birds are huge. These observations would be meaningless if this is not a realistic style of painting, but relationships between the elements is usually a characteristic in my mind and the building swamps the work. These things make it unappealing in my mind and perhaps, that is why you question it. Please note, I am simply an art admirer, not an expert in any way. I wish Jivvy was here. She knows about this, and perhaps, I am all wet.

Think it is fairly competent but not a masterpiece. Someone has worked on this in the past and it has been relined with the new canvas. I would not do anything more with it. It would not be cost effective if you have to pay to have it done.

Do you call paintings like this "pot boilers"?

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

When the painting is 'squared' up in proportion, it doesn't look distorted, at least not to me.....it's just a large village Inn type building, I think.....some damage to it, if you liked it, it could be repaired.....admittedly the sky isn't great, but otherwise, I like it!!!

I like it. As mentioned, looks re lined which is a plus. Nice stretcher. With art, what counts is - do you like it ? If so, enjoy... it's one of a kind.

Thank you all for your opinion!

Also thanks for enhancing the photo! Much better :)

I also like the painting and it looks like it isn't made by some amateur. To bad I can 't link the signature to a professional painter....

Is it possible the signature is from the "repairer"? Or is that "not done" ....

    Thanks!

That signature is the artist. With paintings, there are probably tens of thousands of artist who are lost to history after they die - sometimes when you look and search, eventually info appears. There are just so many painters who aren't listed - yet they did decent work.
