I thought I was the only one who heard of Nan and Bert and their siblings Freddie and Flossie. Have not thought of them in years (1940s)

Heh, last time my older brothers and Cuz got together we were lamenting about our references to the 'Bobbsey Twins', 'Mutt & Jeff', 'Rosie the Riveter' (Mom and her sister built planes during WWII, going to work in their dungarees), etc, being lost on most people. We are a family of compulsive readers, so when I related that my recent conversational reference to 'Big Brother' resulted in the comment that it was a great show (No, it's not!), and a blank expression at mention of Orwell, it shocked the boys, who are still the 'boys', even in their sixties.

The other day, told Mom that the stray kittens were 'gamboling' around, and she commented that it was a word seldom used anymore, but so perfectly described their activity...

I was thinking about the use of the "e" sound at the end of a name and whether or not cats learn their name more easily or not. I can't say I'm sure as I've had some cats that seemed to do a better job of learning English than others. Some seem to understand a lot of words while others seem more dependent on physical indicators or sounds (like shaking the food bowl).

My current cat is Joey (like a kangaroo baby and at the moment my only cat). But he also know his name as Joseph which for some reason we formalize as an endearment. I think he understands more words than any cat I've ever had.

We've had, Invader "Zim", Wicket, Widdle, Puddle, Mama, Kachina and other none "e"s that all seemed to know their names.

 

I'm guessing they no longer read Orwell in school because................well why bother....it's here.

I have heard and read 'career' for 'careen' WAY too much though...
Same with jury rig instead of Jerry rig. They are both VERY different things indeed.
I was shocked and appalled to read Tom Clancy's books where he used jury rig instead of Jerry rig.

KingofThings - thank you for recognizing that those women who took on 'men's' work for the war effort were also heroes, but unfortunately don't believe any photos of Mom at work there exist.

Occasionally, will find someone who understands my saying that Bradbury showed uncanny vision when he wrote Fahrenheit 451 - but as a rule, just get blank stares regarding the author, the book, or even the Oskar Warner/Julie Christie movie, which affected me deeply...

Hehe, showed her that last pic before the Rosie poster, and she said, "Well, that's not me, but it sure could be." She was a driller, at Cessna and Boing in Wichita, and those clothes were what she wore...

Should also say that we're in the process of getting her new hearing aids for her long-time and significant loss from the factory work.

No, she was never military, just a civilian. She did miss the income after the men came back...

I'm sorry there wasn't some benefit awarded.
My Uncle was merchant marine in WWII, a VERY dangerous job indeed especially since he was a boiler tender and if a ship were torpedoed those guys generally didn't get out.
He came home but no bennies for him either.

Up here...they flew em across the pond !

 

And you can bet some of those women got a few shots off when needed, even if they weren't officially "combat" pilots. My old lady cat, Thelma, went on her last ride to the vet today too. Took a while to stop crying. She never did answer to anything but the sound of a catfood can opening.

 

Ahhhhh, Thelma, rest in peace, beautiful. Sounds like you had a good life, calling the shots and in general living it up.
