Subastas Galileo is a little art and antique shop in a not-the-most-upscale neighborhood of Madrid. They appear to deal with low value/high volume auctions. I would be a bit skeptical about their 19th century attribution.

@Debora yeah i agree it's def not 19th cent. The man in the video describing the cart explains that the use of the carts started 1900 or so and went to 1950.

besides that - the French use "Marque Populaire" also in the sense of "generic brand" for products of unknown origin and not only wide-spread or well-known. so it may well be an art student that made up this name to hide behind it.
a bit like brands for pewter - Achille Gamba and Milo are made-up brands for art nouveau pewter and no real persons.

So carros da vino were used in the early automobile age. Odd that, no? Lots featured on period post cards. Haven't seen one with owner's initials on canopy.

@Debora yeah i think that from what he says in the video it was a sort of advertising - propaganda and for show. they were elaborately painted and colorful. so i imagine they became a popular thing to see, a bit of a tradition.

Re canopy, yeah i'm assuming that's artistic license but if @Fid is correct about it Bauchamp possibly being a pseudonym, then could be the artist's real initials(though haven't seen that in the other works- will have to have a close look). but prob a stretch :)

I think you're dealing with two artists. The Bauchamp of the French scenes and the Bauchamp of the Italian.

So where do the initials GF fit in?

not odd at all. the streets were too narrow for lorries and the barrels too heavy for the three-wheelers of Vespa (Ape) or the Fiat cinquecento.
the most beautifully painted carros are those of Sicily (carro Siciliano).

Not exactly what I meant. I was referring to the fact that traditional folkloric-decorated carts, that evoked a pre-automobile past, were being used to deliver wine in parts of Italy until the 1950s. As wine was generally unbottled during this period (because the cost of the bottle was greater than the cost of the wine,) must have been the suppliers' attempt to create awareness and branding for their product.
