Would this be Hudson River School? Tonalism? ???

What style would you call this small painting? The frame is 15" x 10 1/2", painting on board is 10" by 5 3/4". There appears to be a signature but I can't read it. I see and R and then the last 3 letters look like SET or CET. It looks like the number 75 after the T.

I removed it from the frame and it is oil on board mounted on wood. The hanger has been replaced. You can see the old holes on either side of the back. Someone had removed this before I did and recovered the back with that bright white paper. The nails are not the original nails that are holding the painting in place. Thank you.

You sometimes see paintings like this described as Hudson River school but I think more just an old somewhat naïve decorative landscape...... the factory art of its day. I think the value is in your nice circa 1880 frame which probably pre-dates the painting just a bit.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

I agree that it's only "Hudson River" in aspiration... but still, it's a useful term in describing (if you want list it), as it is something most shoppers would think of as HR... :)

You have to be careful using the term "Hudson River" because most of those paintings are pricey and you don't want to give anyone the wrong impression.

I didn't even think of that, Bev. To draw attention of those looking for the "look" but not the high price... maybe "Hudson River STYLE"?
