Hi all. Made a rank amateur mistake today when I bought this set of knives in a leather and silk box. I was at an antique store and they were having a 40% off sale, and not only didI not have my magnifier,I didnt even have my eyeglasses! Long story short, these were advertised as sterling,I saw hallmarks (but blurry to me) and fell in love with the prettiness of them. So tell me,did I make a $50 mistake ? Yall know Im cheap so it killed me to pay that much !There are no sterling marks, only the makers . Break it to me gently ! As always I appreciate any input.

Without proper British silver hallmarks, it would appear so. I take it the pic you showed is on a blade. Have you looked at the collars between the blade and the handle?

They are very pretty and it does look like an impressive box. But they don't appear to be sterling.

And the marks on the blade are for the retailer (T Goode & Co.) Don't know whether they made them or not.

The porcelain handles are probably worth the price of admission though!

Royal Crown Derby made a lot of those porcelain utensil handles...

And, yes, sorry, Johnny, but not sterling...

Up side! They might appeal to the Gen Xers' or Millennials'...they DO NOT WANT SILVER OR PLATE...to much to care for. But these might sell to a younger crowd as easy care! List as retro, vintage...

Hmmmm... I'm not sure about that!

As someone whose daughter-in-law won't own any dishes/utensils/cookware that can't go in the dishwasher, I know what you mean - BUT - I'm also one of those people who has never put a piece of porcelain in the dishwasher. Do you think the handles could stand up to it?

If they sold as sterling you could just return them?

    Hi,
I put all of my Wedgwood pieces in the dishwasher at least once a year for cleaning. I was horrified when I first heard that a couple known for their Wedgwood pieces and their collections did this. I use a weak brand of detergent and NEVER use lemon scented dishwasher detergent. They turn out fine. I use my original Fiestaware in the dishwasher as well, never had a problem use the pieces daily. The only trouble I had was with the newer pieces of Fiestaware which have cracked and lost most of the shine. Most of my dinner plates are all from the early 40s and are just as shiny as ever. I wash my sterling silver in the dishwasher as LONG AS THEY Do NOT touch any other metal.

I agree with Bulldogs...if you care to, you probably could based on the fact they weren't what they were sold as.

Maybe they could go in on top rack china setting...but really...how long could it take to wipe and wash 6 knives...1 minute! I think they would appeal to some younger people.

You can't put anything gilded in the dishwasher and definitely not anything good as it will get etched. Dishwashers destroy antique glassware, in fact, throw away the bloody dishwasher and do the dishes properly.
