Parian (i think) figurine group

No marks. The base shows the vent holes (there is also a tiny one on the back), and there is some pencil writing on the base. But the writing is probably added by an owner and illegible to me anyway? I assume the blue dot is irrelevant? Blue grid background has one inch squares. The girl with dog, plus snake and flower made me wonder if it was based on a classical theme of some sort? @Bronwen ? 19th century? English? Other thoughts?

 

It adds up to an allegorical theme. She's not in my one small reference on Parian ware, but dogs represent faithfulness (think Fido) & this one is saving what is obviously meant to be a maiden from being bitten by a snake, which of course represents danger to both the body & the soul. If only Eurydice had taken a dog with her when she went out picking flowers.

What's in her left hand? Rosebud?

 

Thank you! Her clothing and hair seemed classical to me (do you agree?) Is the tunic slipped off her shoulder with snake underfoot a sign of soon being a woman?

There isn't much damage; her right hand is missing part of one finger and there is something missing (a rope? leash for dog? possibly flowers?) that seems to have run from her left hand to resting on the top of her right thigh - you can see the two ends in the second to last pic. A couple flowers or buds may be the most likely, given the one lying on the ground?

 

Awesome! No, I got it at a thrift store in the last year (can't remember exactly when?) Do you have a link?? If it was the exact same one (with the same damage) then it must have been sent to a thrift in the Boston area?

More neo-classical edging into Romantic.

She is clearly still a child & her loyal dog has the snake underpaw. This is about innocence preserved.

Suspect she was making a garland of roses.

 

Amazing. Thank you!! This is not the same copy of the figurine (though clearly the same piece made by the same company), since the missing fingers are different. This also answers my question about the significance of the blue spot on the base (it is insignificant since only on mine). And strangely there is also handwriting on the base at the same place on this one, though again I can't read it. I wonder if that could possibly have been added when made and not by the owner?

Unfortunately, EBTH doesn't seem to do any research before they sell things, so no more information about when or where it was made. Would anyone with knowledge of Parian ware be able to make some guesses?
