Featured Probably not worth anything BUT?

Looked like folk art.? Bought this at the local flea market last weekend and it was a wreck with the wings just flapping all over. Well I fixed it up and put it into the garden that I tilled today - looks good? I'm sure the wind will make the wings spin as also the body as a wind directional (weather vane?)
I had the post with the steel rod on it so all I had to do is drill a compatible hole into the birds body!!

Handmade wirlygig for St. Louis Cardinals (baseball) fans? Don't place that in Cincinnati Reds country or its liable to be used for target practice (just joking ..... well, maybe)!

I think the OHIO bird is the CARDINAL! I have so many nesting around my bushes - they are so loud!

 

I believe that is correct.

 

We get 6 to 8 every spring fluttering about in the back yard.
I love talking to them......gets them all a twitter !!

 

That's funny - I was out in the barn tonight and a squirrel ran in and was hiding under my machinery - and of course it understood me when I was saying "C'mon little guy, come out of there so I can catch you and let you go outside" - did finally get him outside and off he ran!! Unlike last year when a baby got trapped in the garage and we kept it for a few weeks, got it to eat and then let it go - we have them everywhere in the yard!

 

I feed 3 families , all winter .
I have the luckiest squirrels in the city.........fattest too !

 

Yeah - this one knows to actually come to the front door and begs - of course I have to give her something:

 

I have two that sit on my back porch railing , staring into the window & when I open the door , they jump to the lawn and stand up on their back feet awaiting lunch.

Oh....& BTW ...that's a photo of a boy squirrel .......

 

The cardinal is the state bird of several states besides Ohio: Kentucky, N. Carolina, Illinois, Indiana, Virginia, W. Virginia. This whirligig would feel at home in any of those states as well as any state south of the Mason-Dixon or for that matter any of the states shown in green below where they range year-round.


When I was a kid growing up in MA, seeing a cardinal was rare. Now they tend to be a common sight in MA and CT.

Hi,
Used to have a squirrel that would pound on the screen door when she wanted to eat. I was washing windows one day and she came along and started to tug on the rags I was using. Seems she wanted them to line her nest. She was the only squirrel that I never had a problem with.

I'm a displaced or misplaced Yankee! Born and raised in Southbridge near Sturbridge. My grandparents shopped in at least one of the stores displayed at Sturbridge Village when they were growing up. The store was moved up to Sturbridge Village from their area of CT. Our Youth Fellowship had candlelight services at the white steepled church in Sturbridge Village several times. Both of my parents were of Windham Co., CT. My family moved to Mississippi in 1960 when my step-father's plant started having severe Union problems. It was right in the mist of the Civil Rights troubles!!! Needless to say us transplanted Yankees kept a low profile in those turbulence times. "The South shall rise again" attitude was very prevalent with those of my parents generation, and not with my generation. I had no trouble with any one. I didn't stay down here long for was at college and then spent a year in NYC. I returned South to work in Memphis, TN, where I met and married a west Tennessee boy. Wellllll, he was once a boy!

I have nieces in upper state Vermont, north of Boston to Worcester and Springfield. You can't shake a tree in CT, MA, or any other New England with a cousin or 2 falling out.

In New Mexico, ROADRUNNERS are the squirrels. They are curious, brave, and fun to watch. Before we moved to Ohio, we had a family that would come knock (with their beaks) on the windows and doors for treats. They readily tame to the point of taking food froj your hands.

I was visiting NM once when a roadrunner decided I was his Dad. The darn thing would come running when I went out of the door. It followed me everywhere, once when I got in the car, he started to peck and hit the car door.

I can truthfully say that I have had a (nice) t-shirt which I was wearing at the time made into a "goat teat" (unbeknownst to me) while I was visiting the Carl Sandburg home in Flat Rock, NC. DH was the one who discovered that a young goat in Mrs. Sandburg's herd of goats had been "nursing" on the back of my t-shirt for quite a while without my noticing it.

Yeah, Gregsie, aren't they coolio? They will beg to the point of irritating you, at picnics. If you give them a treat (of anything) they will bang it on the ground a few times before they eat it, just as they bang little lizards and such to kill them befoire they gobble 'em.
