antique? bulbous oil vessel/jar?

Can anyone identify it? It's roughly 1.5 lbs, 5" tall, and 5" across. As you can see, the inside is interesting. Not sure if that's the natural crazing or some design.

 

Food storage of some sort. Missing a lid.
Interesting. I would guess late 1800s.

 

Crazing may have been from heat.

 

What part of the world do you think it was made in?

 

Nice storage vessel. Not for oil, with that wide top. Europe or a European influenced part of the world, so it could be US made.

 

I would have called it a crock. Not being a pottery person, I don't see what there is about it that looks particularly old. This looks to me more like a glaze effect than true crazing:



I take it this must be the interior? Why is outer surface so unblemished?

 

It's only 5" tall. I always think of crocks as being at least a gallon, but I could be wrong.
Might have been mustard, horseradish or something else.

My bad, as they say. Did not take note of size. So a mini-crock. Do mustard & other condiment pots always have an opening for the spoon?

 

On a table as servers - yes.
Might not be mustard/horseradish - was just thinking what might be up on a shelf in a small storage container.

 

Whatever it was made to be, I don't think it is > 100 years old. Just my uneducated opinion.

 

Could be spice of some sort.
It's a small utility storage jar of some sort. Probably for what ever you needed.

With that glaze, I think it is 1920s or older - so roughly 100 years or more.
But I'm not an expert.
Hopefully one of the potties will show up sometime.
Getting close to Christmas so a lot of last minute and family things to do. May take a few days.
