Good morning all, my wife and I recently came across this oil painting at a local auction and I'm having difficulty in tracing the period in which it was painted. The artists name comes up empty.it is approximately 30" x 40" , the oils used are cracking and it depicts a woman playing with her half shaved dog in a very opulent setting. A delightful image. The furniture legs delineate I believe Baroque and the culture I think French? Painted on linen as evidenced by the back photo. Other than that I have no clue. Any ideas? Oh and the name at the lower right is J. Beckett. Thank you all

Oh my gosh, I see what you mean, the photo with resizing and compression really distorts the image, I've uploaded another photo.
The painting detail is incredible and unfortunately any photo I take is awful in comparison.

Welcome Danyana. It is a very nice painting, in spite of the rear end confusion.;)
It is meant to give your dog that fashionable lion look.:playful:

I think the subject matter is older than the painting. Both the style of the painting and the materials look fairly new.

When you think what a show cut is for a standard poodle, this is nothing. We had to do something similar to our very thick-coated pekingese when summer came & he was just too matted for us to comb out. Vet left from the ruff forward & his tail, and he really did look like a little lion. We realized he was probably more comfortable that way in the heat, so it became a regular thing.

All subject matter gives you is a time before which the painting could not have been made, a terminus post quem.

Love it when you talk dirty, Bronwen.

Your painting is old-tyme-y rather than old time. The period shown is Regency in England or Régence in France. But it wasn't painted then. I suspect early-20th century.

I suspect it could have been painted even more recently. It is painted in a charmingly naive way, but with great skill. I love the folds on the dress.

Ive been thinking the same thing though if that is correct someone put alot of time and effort into re-creating a style that jumps a century or 2. Especially something of this size. It is certainly confusing. There are no maker marks on the linen that I can see.

I have what could be the smoother haired sister of this cat occupying the right side of my desk, reclining butt to butt with her orange buddy taking up the left.

Back to the painting. My sense is that it is advanced student copy of a work from the period portrayed. Even Picasso painted copies of the Old Masters as a way of working on his skills.

It feels like this sort of thing to me:

Painter was sister-in-law of Fragonard. (See cat #11.)

Yes, but... Those little hoof-life feet aren't period. They're what gives it a non-period flavor.

not too sure about that when looking at the legs of the side table. rather Louis XVI or Napoleon III.

Think I see 8 feet in the painting, which ones do you mean? Wonder if it wasn't undertaken as an exercise in perspective as much as anything.

The woman's shoes are not period to her dress.
