When we moved to NH 2 years ago, I gave a 5-gallon glass jug filled to the brim with matchbooks to a budding young collector in CT. He was thrilled.

I recently have been opening some old boxes that inadvertently got moved here with us. These particular boxes were all still packed from our 1996 move from DC to CT - they all had ended up in the garage here. I've found three (approximately quart-sized) plastic bags' worth of matches that I missed giving away when we left CT.

These were all packed up in 1996, so they're at least 20 years old. Most are probably from the DC area.

There was some talk about matchbook collecting here on the boards recently, so I thought someone might want these - for free.

If you're interested, post here. If more than one person wants them, I'll do a random pick on Sunday the 28th.

    Hmmmmmmm....,
Long ago I was on FX with a 30s double-sided porcelain Oldsmobile sign.
Also in the show was the Guiness record matchbook collector. Wow was that pretty amazing!
I would be interested thank you.
No Komo, not going to challenge him. ;)

Just a note, make sure the matches are removed.
Here it is prohibited to send matches by airmail to the US, I`m sure its the same within the US.

    Not exactly.
They cannot go by air. If they are the very old, non 'safety' matches, that is an issue.
If they are 'safe' they have to be revealed and noted for ground transport only.
These should be 'safety' matches at 20 years old.

King, I'll put your name in the hat!

Just a note, make sure the matches are removed.
    Thanks for the reminder, Davey.

I have actually mailed matches before, and I was told at the post office that if I put them inside a sealed metal container (like a cookie tin with a tight-fitting lid) then placed that inside a mailing box, there would be no problem.

I certainly don't want to do anything dangerous here!

There was a rare matchbook recently on Antiques Roadshow, and the expert mentioned that a matchbook with the matches intact is valued by collectors, but that removal of the matches causes a large decrease in value.

That seems to be more so if the matches have graphics on them. Many are truly amazing and some can be a foot or more long!
Perhaps not removing other book's matches has changed but you would agree it is dangerous.
There are special pages for folders that can only take the 'normal' ones opened up with no matches attached.
I was on FX with the largest known collector in the world at that time with something of mine. I was so intrigued I joined the matchbook collectors club for years.
I have just gone through all these and I'm quite pleased! ;)
