Hmmm, perhaps that "tire cozy" is one way we could immediately (without seeing their license plates up close) identify "snowbird" drivers we happen upon in winter months on our roads.

 

I like "tire cozy" as a name for this...

 

Why yes I do...New England.

 

Okay... we Mexicans have some hilarious motoring habits... low riders... hydraulic jumping... tiny steering wheels... leopard upholstery... bizarro paint-jobs. I have my pet theories on the origins and meaning of all.

But I need to understand... with love and affectionate and respect... i ask... WHY? Why a crocheted wheel cover? Expressing affection for your ride? Showing crochet skills? Signaling a howdy to like-minded crafters?

Please help me be a more savvy citizen!

Why?

 

This one was in the Seattle area.....
It's usually a bit wet here over the winter and some don't go out til the Easter Bunny sees its tail....and you know this is hard to do and so... Lots of time for such things.

 

Because we all like our rides to reflect on us in some way.
After Henry realized that folks were not pleased with one model in one color ....well.....that was that !!

It's not so much about the ride or the culture.
It's about the individual... being an individual.

Why do Mexicans like those tiny steering wheels?

This brought howls at a recent wedding reception.

 

Your two prints are by Gerda Christoffersen, Danish-born artist who worked in Canada and the U.S. The hat and what appears to be a serape on the little boy makes them appear to be Mexican, but they are actually attempting to depict Navajo American Indian children, a subject Christoffersen was known for.

The little girl's hair, squash blossom necklace, and turquoise belt are accurate, as are the moccasins on both, and the background does look like it's supposed to be Monument Valley. The fringed serape/poncho on the little boy is not typical Navajo dress, however, but could be artistic license on the part of Christoffersen. Her Native American children seldom are portrayed authentically.

Tree cozy?

 

Have seen a black H3 with a pink 'Hummer' graphic and a pink crocheted 'doily' wheel cover - can find a variety on Etsy, steering wheel covers too. Used to get flack from some buddies for 'girling up' my beloved old
red Passport with floral seat covers and the big dragonfly I painted on the wheel cover, but that pales in comparison to pink lace on a Hummer...
