A nice stick with mother-of-pearl inlaying

Hello !

I have a nice stick with mother-of-pearl inlaying, and lines in iron (i mean).

My mother believe it's a stick from the great war (trench art).

But I think that in a trench during the war, a soldier doesn't have mother-of-pearl

So, I have no idea about the origins of this stick.

Do you ever see a stick as this one ? Do you have a idea about the origins ?

an anglo-indian walking stick I'd imagine...

 

This is a style which is said to have originated in Damascus, and spread from there westward as far as Morocco and Spain, and Eastward through the southern half of the Asian continent as far as the island states of Indonesia and the Philippines. It can also be found on the East African island of Zanzibar.
As you can see, I am trying to make it very simple.
The metal could be silver, but more likely a tin and lead alloy, which is still used in the Middle East and Asia Minor.

This stick is a fairly simple version of the style, which means it was made for local, native use somewhere. That rules out Anglo-Indian/Indo-Portuguese/Indo-Dutch, which would show a clear European design influence and more sophistication.

I have seen similar simple inlay on Ottoman walking sticks, so maybe that is its origin.
WW I, could it have come from someone who fought against the Turks?

It is in better condition than yours, but I think the seller is very ambitious.
