My late mother was given these 'antique silverware' items as a retirement gift in the early 1980's whilst working in Australia. Would love to be able to identify the make, origin and period. Apologies I have no other details other than the images attached.[IMG][IMG][IMG]

Looks like it's sterling. Should polish up a treat.

Yep that looks spot on. Thanks a lot. Is it likely to be valuable beyond its sentimental significance?

It's definitely real silver. But it needs a DAMN good clean!!

Once it's been *carefully* polished, it should look beautiful. Then, just use it! :)

Silver spoons (for the little jar with the hole in its lid) are very easy to find at flea-markets. Should have no problems replacing that with another silver spoon.

Does anyone besides me think that this is an unusual retirement gift? When I retired, I received a very low quality stainless steel flatware service for 12 (a company gift, not from friends). In 1980 this would have been a nice antique group and a pleasantly surprising gift. Was your mother known to love antique silver or just anything antique? It's a pretty set.

    Maybe not for Australia..?
Does the monogram match her name ??

Well, the monogram is in a much older style font than 1980's, but that could have been the reason it was purchased for her.

bakers - you could be right! Maybe it was a lovely coincidence. SIS dated the items to 1905 so they were already 75 years old in 1980. I just think it's so nice to receive this kind of gift. I also thought that maybe she had worked at her company for 25 years (silver, get it?).

She did appreciate fine tableware. She was a theatre nurse and this set was given to her by the surgeons when she stopped working to have us kids. They're not her initials and she wouldn't have clocked up 25 years.... I'm guessing maybe just a thoughtful gift.
