Medieval iberian plate

Hi. I bought an old plate dated in 1254 and stamped in arabic name, and it was made during the medieval period, Really i don't know the name of metal ...bronze Or copper?

@abdel - 1254 in the Hijri Calendar would be 1838 or the beginning of 1839.

This is not hijri date mean. They used gregorian calendar in that time.

 

I’m guessing it was engraved after electric engraving tools came into use.

 

Hand chased,no electricity needed.

 

To me, it seems a bit unusual for an ordinary object like this to have an engraved date

Who are 'they'? When is 'in that time'? The Gregorian calendar came into use in 1582.




That looks like 1281 to me. Since that cannot be a Gregorian date & the rest of the writing is in Arabic, think it is fair to assume it is a hijiri date of approximately 1864. (Before someone objects that Arabic is written right to left: the script is; numerals are written left to right.)

Has the plate been cleaned in any way? I would expect copper or bronze, which contains copper, to show the blue-green oxidation called verdigris if the item is 150 years old. If it is 750 years old, I would expect it to have patina all over. Is the metal exposed by the engraving silvery colored, as it looks in the photos?

 

No. I bought it as is it, Never cleaned, it was comes from spain, and there is no engraving silvery colored. Just one color all over patina

 

Abdel, what size? -diameter and height please! Also, what is the destination for this object, is it for your collection or do you intend to resell it? Have you sought an assessment from a museum or dealer? Often the judgment of an honest, knowledgeable person who can handle the object, is better than people with varying levels of experience (here) who can only see photos. I do appreciate the nice photos; always include dimensions please.

1283, approx. 1866. Color in these photos looks more like copper than bronze. although still surprised to see no signs of oxidation. The sides look hammered to me, a common way of working copper. The bottom appears to have been turned in some way. I do not know enough about metal working techniques.

You said the other engraving is a name. Are you able to read it? Does researching it give you any ideas about its origin?

 

As i said. Andalusian empire doesn't use just hijri date. They also used georgian date. And i don't think spain in 19th century used islamic name or arabian style.

 

The name is : ملك سعد محمد البدري ١٢٨٣ it means: king saãd mohamed al badri 1283.

I don't understand the other writing. Writed with arabic but i don't know the meaning " ملك وداكن الببل ١٢٥٤" " king wadakin al bil" it has no meaning in arabic.

This is the best photo to show the type of engraving tool used. I think the electric power in Spain is 50 hz, so you can tell that a character stroke containing 25 little cuts took the engraver about 1/2 second to make. It seems that person was a native Arabic-writer (fast writing) as opposed to some foreigner trying to copy something, which would be slower and not as smooth.
