Does anybody recognise this signature? I'm struggling a little deciphering it.

    Thanks for the help :)

Signature could be J. Verreyt (Jacob Johann Verreyt), but he gets creative with the double r. He's reversed (mirrored) the second r.

This artist is known to be a landscape artist, though, so I really am not sure.

I'm not saying this is his work, or implying anything. If it is an original work, or anything else, is difficult to determine from this photograph.

    One of his portraits:

    He's holding a palette and brushes, so there's a good chance it's a self-portrait.

His dates are Antwerp 1807- Bonn 1872 so would have been 27. Looks about right.

I think it is a self portrait of Jacob Johann Verreyt! Great job finding that! It's date to 1834 doesn't seem off with his age being 27 at that time.

Its for sale at £360 which I know is good but Im unsure about it. I'd think about keeping it but the price needs to be right. I'll keep it in mind.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Here's the signature with the colors inverted....easier to read I think......

A portrait of of a gentleman mid 19thc isn't going to be ever worth a lot unless the sitter was famous/artist was primarily a portrait artist ..a self portrait may glean a couple of extra points but that's about it. At least he isn't an ugly old codger.

Now 19th c portraits of pretty women ...different story!

As in the movie "the best offer" with Geoffrey Rush ...

It's a gamble for sure. I would think long and hard as the seller can look up the same information on the internet about prices. On the other hand they may have had it for a long time or are not the type who do research.

I'm not entirely sure the seller could read the signature. The info on the ticket didn't say anything other than oil on cavas of artist.

Oooo it's tempting. I like that it's an important part of a little bit of art history. I'd have to leave it, I'll probably tell the seller next time I'm there.

I completely understand the feeling. I will look at something and long for it to be real. In this case, your surmise may be true. A dealer's mistake. A failure to read a signature correctly. It is all possible. I have been burned, though, that's why I hang around here. You got some good information, so I appreciate your post.

I wish I had more money and space haha.

I could spend the same money on something a little more practical to me to sell. It's a beast of a painting too for me

I agree with Blooey, most portraits don't garner much money unless by a well known artist or of a famous person. This is nicely done and potentially as suggested a self portrait. I think it is a shame that beautifully done portraits don't fetch much, I love studying the techniques used on these quality pieces.
