Cool, sounds like fun. Have a good trip home!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Anti, I am not sure that I understand completely. One thing that occurs to me would be to have them digitized with some kind of safety measures in place to make them difficult or impossible to alter. The way to do this falls outside of my knowledge area.

I am at the SLC airport and my plane is about to board. 'Bye for now.

    Thought I'd resurrect this thread....

We've finally put a deadline on selling our house in Massachusetts and moving back to Delaware, where my husband grew up and I lived in my early 20s. We have family there (none here) plus the climate is milder and the cost of living in DE is significantly lower. And we'd like to downsize, anyway. Our deadline is 1-2 years, with a preference for 1 year.

It's relevant to this thread 'cause we need to sell off a large amount of stuff to make moving more do-able... and to make our house more appealing to prospective buyers. We also need to make even more progress in organizing what's here. The current clutter and overload of stuff would probably scare most home buyers off.

I'll probably use this thread to talk about our progress to help keep myself motivated and ask for ideas here and there. And I'll probably start offering more items in our Give Aways forum, and may offer some for sale in Antiquers, too. I want a lot of stuff outta here!

    My first question...

Has anyone used Craig's List much for selling things? What types of items tend to work best there? How do prices usually compare to eBay solds? Any tips on using it?

Yes. I never put my name, address or email. I ask they email me through CL with their name and phone number so I can call them to make an appointment. Their email goes straight through the CL emailing system, so they don't get my email addy at all.

LOTS of scammers but they are pretty easy to spot.

Have tried CL in the past but have had zero results. People here just do not use it for antiques. I imagine it would be better in your location.

@Figtree3 sorry I just saw your reply. I'm not sure what you mean about using "safety checks" with doing my own digital media?

When someone asks me a legitimate question about a piece through the CL email system, but they don't give their name and phone number, I respond to their question by answering it in my ad.

I mostly sell LOTS of stuff - entire 6'x6' shelves of stuff - for one low price on CL. This is how I cleared out most of the 4000' sq.ft of stuff collected in my ex-biz shop. The highest quality stuff came home with me. *YIKES* ..and I haven't dealt with that yet.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies! Another reason why I love Antiquers.

Anti, I appreciate the great tips. Safety is one of my concerns. What payment methods will you accept from a CL buyer? Where do you meet them to do the transaction?

Brad, there are a lot of folks who work in high tech in our area, so it wouldn't surprise me if local online sales work better here than some parts of the country.

    King, will do!

I may try local facebook groups, too. Not sure how well they work around her, though.

I do sell some things on Craigslist. It can take some time. A lot of people don't show up and don't bother to cancel. Only take cash. Never take a check or Paypal. Never let them in the house. I have a garage and will meet them in the garage or in front of it. Be prepared to haggle. They almost always ask for a discount so set your price accordingly. Always put "Cash Only" in your ad.

    Signs of scammers.

I never answer emails that state they've been trying to reach me but Craigslist email isn't working and they provide another email address off Craigslist. It's a scammer.

You get a long email describing their daily routine or that they are out of town right now but want to arrange to meet. It's a scammer.

They want you to take a money order and pay the shipper. Always a scam.
Refer back to only take only cash payments.

I don't make an appointment unless they call me to discuss arranging the appointment. If they won't call me, I don't set up the appointment. You can tell a lot by speaking with someone.

    CASH......ONLY !!!!!!
    Meet only in a public place....with lots of traffic.....mall parking lot.....cop shop...ect..
& depending on the size of the item.......if I had to be near my car....I'd cover the licence plate !!....or stand next to another car......

Thanks, Mill Cove and Komo for the great tips. Our police station is just a few miles away, so maybe meeting in their parking lot would be a good idea.

Hmm, maybe I should get a cheap mobile phone to use for CL?

For higher priced items, would accepting a USPS money order have risks? (I know not to accept other types of money orders.)

    >Throw away phone sounds like a good idea!
    >I wouldn't take a MO unless you could cash it right then. Will the Post Office do that? I've never tried so don't know.
    >If your bank takes it what if it kicks back?
    >If they had cash to buy it...........................why buy it???

Good questions, King. I think the P.O. does cash their own money orders, but not sure.

I'm thinking some people might not be comfortable carrying a large amount of cash. And they probably can purchase a P.O. money order using a credit card?

    >I should think the PO would but it may depend upon how much and at what time of day.
    >I thought of the cash issue but....thy had to carry it to PO no???
Would they put your name on it right when purchased then?
    >I've only bought them with cash.

Thanks, King. If the P.O. is warning against fraud, it sounds like they have been faked in the past....

I would never take anything but cash. I've sold a few expensive piece of furniture where they came to my home and they paid cash without any problems but only after we spoke on the phone. If a lot of cash is involved, I make sure that someone else is with me, even at home.

My local police station allows you to meet inside in their lobby, check with your station. They probably will allow it.

I've only met people in a public place a couple of times and only after we spoke on the phone. If someone sounds fishy or not on the level, I won't arrange the appointment. That's why if they won't call, I don't make the appointments by email no matter what the meeting circumstances are.

I've been selling on Craigslist for about 7 years. I use my own phone number and never had any problems.
