Featured Pretty and pretty cool pierced brass lamp

Going to go grab this tonight. Not sure exactly where it’s from haven’t done much research yet. Turkish, Moroccan, otherwise? Either way it’s cool. Most of the shades in this shape seem to be described as Moroccan. Not sure if the imagery matches that or not.

Anyone else like it?

 

@J Dagger - I think it's delightful, though I'm a little bit surprised that the figures in the pierced work are inverted. Zoroastrian design influence, I wonder?

I found that very odd as well. Not possible it was a basket/bowl or something transformed into a shade? I know shades in this shape and style are common so I’m guessing not. Weird.

 

The inversion is very strange, maybe it has to do with the way they are reflected on the ceiling?
Although Zoroastrian is an idea, I get a Turkish vibe from this one. Maybe Turkish Alawi, which has an old Tengerism (Turkic Shamanism) influence?

Are you going to try it out? I would love to know if it works that way. Of course I would really love to be present, and gaze at the 'wonders of the Orient' in amazement.

 

@Any Jewelry - Now, now - we both know that, "wonders of the Orient," is nothing more than an anagram of, "Od Ferries The Won Ton." Seems like a rather strange vocation for an hypothetical force, no?

Oh I’m gonna give it a whirl for sure! I have doubts you will be able to see anything projected on the ceiling and walls other than dots but we shall see.

 

looks like a marriage to me. the figural medallions that seem to be inverted look similar to mosque ceiling lamps Persian-style.

 

I was thinking the same thing looking at it last night. This looks like an amalgamation if parts that wasn’t necessarily intended to go together. The thing I noticed even before I went and got it outside of the inversion was the base being a seemingly totally different alloy and hence color than the rest of the lamp. Then the top portion doesn’t seem to match the shade in theme. Alloy looks to match but the animal/character theme doesn’t carry over at all. The last part may be typical I don’t know.

 

I did some more looking and I can up with Mamluk, Syrian it Egyptian maybe. Mamluk was a warrior/knight slave caste. They held a high place in some societies but could be bought as slaves I guess. Very interesting juxtaposition. Napoleons personal body guard was Mamluk. Lots of animals like mine in their imagery.

 

Looks great lit up but the characters being upside down doesn’t help here.

The Mamluks ruled Egypt for some time, those are the Mamluks people mean when they say something is Mamluk style. It is just another term for an old Egyptian Islamic style.

 

Yes. I think I read they ruled an area including and quite a big larger than just Egypt. Including Syria. A lot of the stuff I’ve seen described as Mamluk is also described as Cairoware which would be the same as what you’re saying more or less.
