hello, i have a engraving that has the name E. Burney on the bottom left hand side of it, there is also a paper watermark on it that has the initials 'B.F.K Rives', there is also a raised paper stamp on the bottom right side of the paper with the initials ATS or AFS, does anyone might know what these marks or the artist might be, Thanks

Google reverse images says this engraving is based on a painting by William Adolphe Bouguereau.

The conjoined letters are AFS not ATS.

EDIT - and I suspect it has something to do with the paper and not the artists.

I'm wondering if the engraver misidentified the piece as being by Edward Francis Burney.

Can you show a picture of the full piece so that we can see the placement of all the elements (signatures, embossing, remarque)?

    Hi Jivvy!

    It's spelled differently after the "G" - "Bougareau" - a copy of a signature?

It looks like the same spelling to me, but I admit, the photo is a bit too smudgy for me to be sure.

But if it's wrong, I'm certain it wouldn't be the first time an engraver made such a mistake. ;)

Either trick of jpg artifacts/poor lighting of original photo, or I think you guys are right that it's different (ie, engraver misspelled the name).

Now I'm thinking it's poorly executed, but correct spelling.

Thanks, Jivvy, your eyes are much better than mine!! :joyful::joyful:

After the "G" - it didn't exactly look like an "A" to me, still cannot decipher it! ;)

I was thinking about it being an "A" because that would be the correct pronunciation of the French name, correct? ;)

But it just didn't quite look like an "A" either!

ATS could well be the American Tract Society.

The Burney name and the remarque may well be from the same hand, but I find it hard to believe that's the person responsible for the print. The name seems to me rather clumsy for someone with the necessary skill. It is possible that Burney was the name of the technician who pulled the print, as sometimes happened.
