So here is one of my goodies. I don't really know how old it is but it is definitely cool enough to share on here. It is 6 foot wide and 3 feet tall. The owner called it a headdress but I think it might actually be more of a back piece. It's the real deal though that, I do know. I think it will make a unique auction lot. It's different. 00f0f_fZ6dArXdFXQ_600x450.jpg

    Oh my god, it's awesome!

It looks like something a showgirl would have worn in Vegas. Did the former owner say it was from Mardi Gras? I enjoy how they have it displayed. I don't think I could pull it off in my house, but what an unusual presentation and piece.

Get as much info from the former owner as possible as to age, where they got it, etc. Maybe someone here will have ideas, too...

I could never pull it off in my house either. I wish he had the whole costume I bet it was fantastic.

The owner says it was worn by a girl on a Mardi Gras Float.

So form a quick search it does seem that Columbus is a running theme at Mardi Gras they have doubloons that they throw that have Columbus on them. I admittedly don't know much about what goes on in New Orleans on Mardi Gras. I have never been.:-( I mean I know the jest of what goes on but I am betting your right Bakersgma this has something to do with Columbus. That is probably the Nina and the Pinta.

Can you imagine trying to get through a door or just walk with that thing on. LOL! That takes a special kind of talent that I just don't have. LOL! It would be a killer costume though.

You'd get to know how a peacock feels in any case.

Back to the costume... it was mine and I was planning sell, I would ask how long the owner has had it, where they got it, what could they tell me --which float? what year? I think any info like that, esp. regarding age, might be of interest to a potential owner. From the photo, I wouldn't rule vintage out, but is impossible to tell not having it in the hand. (You might also want to hang on to the photo you posted, just to show a display idea.)

This is not the kind of thing most people would come to an auction for, but if you got a few folks interested ahead of time, could do well.

Kasper, you'll have to try it on for us!

Yes I plan to meet with the owner next week when we pick up his items. I am going to see what else he can tell me about it and some of his other items.

It didn't sound like he knew a lot about this particular piece.

He was able to give me a lot more information on his other consignments which are honestly all amazing.

He is quite the collector. I will definitely let yall know when I am able to find out more. I hope we are able to do well for him on his consignments cause I believe he will be a highly valued client if we can do a good job on these first few he has more. I do believe it is vintage. It is very elaborate with thousands of sequins.

Well, one question would be how long has the collector had it? If he just got it last year, won't tell you much, but can't hurt to ask. It really is an unusual piece. Can't wait to see the other items.

The costume probably consisted of less material than the headdress!

Find out which Krewe. That will help with the sale. People collect specific Krewe items.
