To be totally honest, I have no idea what this thing is for.

What size is it? The date would most likely be when it was presented, the significance personal, whether a birthday, anniversary, graduation, or whatever...

Eh, doubt the English 'William Jacobson' was given an item engraved in Norwegian or German for 'Wilhelm Jacobsen' - nice try though...;)

Likely just a purse for his money and valuables, small enough to keep on his person.

I would have to agree, Cheryl.
I was thinking coin purse, too... would the date have been the day it was given to him, or...?
    Who knows...

Hehe, a mystery - sure the date held significance for him, but without any other information, no way to know what it was. Do feel, given the name, it's much more likely to be Norwegian - and tracking down patronymic Scandinavian surnames without any family information can be very difficult...

Cheryl, you are SO on target here! My own Swedish relatives took (got?) the name JOHNSON when they came to the US. It took me YEARS to trace the family in Sweden!

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

It still looked like it said more to the left on the other side where you hadn't cleaned off yet.....
