I have got this, well I don't know what... Jar? I believe it is Asian and I know it has belonged to my mother all my life. The brass (?) rim of the cup is loose while the rim of the lid is attached to the lid. I put a dollar bill next to it just to show the size of the object. What is it? Where and when does it come from?

It looks like something she would keep on her dresser and use for random pins, buttons, clips...things like that.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

Maybe not Asian? Has a Victorian or later revival vibe for me. I'm NOT a glass/china person, but plenty here are. I can't wait to see what's said!

Not Asian. Possibly French. It's a receptacle for thingies. ;)

I agree with owned - not Asian, possibly French or German. You wouldn't find those numbers on the bottom of an Asian piece. The finial bothers me - doesn't fit somehow. Still a very nice little trinket box.

I agree it's a vanity piece. Unfortunately, when I clicked on the photo to make it bigger it took me to a foreign web page. You should upload pictures directly here. Some of us are not happy being transported to unknown web pages.

Sorry about the link to that other web page. I couldn't upload more than one picture here and I wanted to show more pictures.

dgbjwc - you made me see something I haven't seen before and you made me learn a new word. Finial - I had to look that up. Although I don't know what it is called in Swedish I now understand what it is. When having a closer look at it I recognize the design. My father was a goldsmith and lots of stuff he made had similar designs so the finial must have been made by him. Still wondering what this object should be called.

Hello pingis - The story about your father is very interesting. It's always nice to have additional family memories about a piece. If the box was special to your mother then she must have been very pleased when your father fixed it.

Although there is no one name for this type of object I would call this a trinket box. At one time these were common items on a lady's vanity table. She would keep small pins or other tiny objects that she needed on a regular basis. As hairpins, etc. fell out of use the boxes tended to be appreciated more for their beauty rather than for their utility. I have a small collection of Limoges trinket boxes which I keep in one of my cabinets. When I search for these boxes "trinket box" is the term I use.

It is not uncommon for the metal ring along the top to be loose. The glue that held them in place dries out over the years. Your box is very nice. The metal fixtures help to make it special. The decoration is also very nice. The repair to the finial will hold the value down but I hope you treasure it for the memories it brings. I am glad my comments have been helpful to you.
