Two Japanese Antique Woodblock Prints

Two Japanese Antique Woodblock Prints . I wondering if any would be able to help ID the artists on these.

 

how do you know they are over 100 years old ?

 

Pretty sure these are a couple of Takahashi Shotei prints - very nice BTW

 

Well, these were found with a Photo album from 1908-1912. I assumed the sailor picked these up on his tour sometime.

Very nice, Birdchild, but the style is a later style. And Takahashi Shotei is one of the later artists, a noted one. It doesn't have to be antique to be good.

Quite possible and likely that the @Birdchild prints do date from the period he/she mentions and are early pre-earthquake designs. The one shown by @scoutshouse could be one of the later re-cuts.

The original woodblocks were lost in the fire and some were re-cut in the 1930's.

Shotei, Hiroaki or Komei - Don't Get Confused!

Hiroaki used a variety of names, signatures and seals during his lifetime. From 1907 until 1922 he used the name Shotei and after 1922 Hiroaki or Komei.

He is not the only one in Japanese art. Or art from other parts of Asia.
Or ancestors from Asia.

 

Ahh, okay thanks for the help everyone. I bought a few asian peices at the estate sale these came out of the other stuff I got I believe is Chinese. Takahashi Shotei/Hiroaki same artist different seals.
