Egyptian "Tomb Tray"-translate the hieroglyphics?

    The King Tut craze also wandered through my mind, but without any highly recognized King Tut cartouches (either his name/birth cartouche or his throne cartouche), I scratched that off my list. These cartouches are not even close to those known for other pharaohs such as those for the Ramasesses, Athenaten, etc... or wives such as Nerfertti. The glyphs in these cartouches just don't look quite "kosher." Those birds are not owls, hawks, vultures, quail chicks, ducks or ibis that are found on some cartouches. I vote fantasy.

    Here are some of the glyphs in message #14 from top to bottom
    loaf of bread = T sound
    Tau sign
    basket = possibly C or K sound
    foot with lower leg on it's side= sign for the B sound
    bird
    wave for water = sound of N
    2 ramps/pennants???
    above the 2nd bird I don't know
    2nd bird
    wave for water
    Tau sign.

    This cartouche is framed with a looped rope representing magical powers. At the bottom the rope forms an ankh, luck/life.

    Thanks Susan, certainly fantasy is a good possibility. I'm seeing or maybe imagining patterns among the various glyph collections on the tray which could indicate some form of encryption was used; if so hopefully the key is on the tray somewhere. But before I spend more time on it I'll wait to see what the folks on the Egyptology forum say-they might agree with you completely. I suspect many of them are out getting embalmed tonight.

    Thanks, interesting, so now the only two copper examples we know of are also the only ones with hundreds of tiny glyphs. Wonder where they pulled that $5K price from? Gueridon, thanks for that, have seen them but never knew they had their own name.

    Thanks-my guess is that biz is set up to sell to people who have way more money than brains, and another guess is that they buy their merchandise off Eboo or the street and seldom pay over $100. for anything, marking it all up 1000 % or more. If you can make a living off of super-rich/super-dumb, why not I guess! They do that until they get careless and defraud someone like Mr. Koch, who has the will and the money to ruin the rest of their miserable lives with lawsuits and jail time.

    Thanks to all who helped with this, I'm now 100% convinced the little symbols on the tray are just decorative as y'all said. Now I can enjoy it as art and not worry that it contains some messages or philosophy or some ancient curse I wouldn't want hanging on my wall.

    If you find yourself in need of professional hieroglyphic translation sometime, a company called "Kemet Design" says they can usually do so for a few pounds. They verified that the Tomb Tray was purely decorative without charging anything.
