Hi everybody and Happy New Year!!! I have had this for a while and was wondering if anybody knows why this Deruta basket is spelled with a V?? And is there any way to date it? Just a small basket with handle, about 5 inch across. TIA IMG_1353.JPG IMG_1354.JPG IMG_1355.JPG IMG_1356.JPG

Deruta is Italian. Italy was the home of Latin, as a language, which used V for U. even now, there's a conceit of writing U as V sometimes.

The modern English alphabet is based on the Latin alphabet established by the Romans. The first thing to be aware of is that there were no lower case letters, only capitals. Letters K, Y and Z were used only for writing words of Greek origin. The letters J, U and W were added to the alphabet at a later stage to write languages other than Latin. U is a modern variant of V. The now defunct ARS Deruta (Art of Deruta) should not be confused with the currently active ARS Artigiana in Deruta. Your basket was probably made in the late 1940's, early 1950's. I base this assumption on the overall design, particularly inside the basket where all those dots reside. These dots imitate a glazing process known as granulato (granulation). This was a very popular design feature in the period I mentioned. It was made famous and popular by the artist Lini Assolini of Albisola. Ars Deruta never achieved the status of some of the more established potteries but it was popular with tourists.
