    Now that I think about it all my Georgian sewing boxes have locks, some keys are missing though and it's best not to lock them anyway...
    Maybe it was to stop servants from stealing things such as pieces of embroidery etc...

    Yes that's right, some ladies would have had silver thimbles, even gold ones in them, expensive embroidery silks and so on, these boxes weren't for everyday mundane sewing items ...
