    Hi folks

was supposed to be out christmas shopping yesterday but spent all day in the thrifts.
    found some cool things though.

i'm presuming this is from india way, very much in the same technique style as a beggars bowl i found

don't know if its silver or a tinned copper,

    i'm guessing its pretty old

any info or thoughts would be a massive help

Great find and beautiful shape. It looks like silver to me, do have it tested.
Origin is tricky, I get a feeling it is Malay*. It could be Islamic India or Pakistan though.

*Malays are not Malaysians. Malays originated in Sumatra, Indonesia, and spread along the coasts and waterways of most of Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore. Wherever they live, their culture still bears many Sumatran Islamic characteristics.
The state of Malaysia is named after the Malays, its inhabitants are called Malaysians.

It looks more Persian than Indian to me.

I was thinking Persian too, but I agree with aj, tricky to attribute. I do think it’s silver.

Brilliant Chas-IMHO one of your best so far. Can't wait to hear exactly what you've found.
PS-You've got to be glad that little gold Kiwi wasn't your final pick of the year. Christmas or not-you simply can't keep a great picker down !

thanks guys, it looks like someone caked it in cleaning fluid if you look close, so would look much better after cleaning that off.

not sure whether to clean it up though and remove the patina, just maybe warm water to remove the excess polish

I'd start with the warm water.

The two cross-fertilized early and often. I can't tell the two apart sometimes unless there's writing. Sanscrit/Hindi means India, and Islamic script means Persian.

I thought Persian too. Southeast Asian came to mind too though and doesn’t seem out of the question. Looks silver to me also. I’ve never felt confident testing unknown silver purities with acid. I hope you get a good result. Neat find!

Urdu and some other Subcontinental languages are also written in Perso-Arabic script.
A lot of Indo-Persian silver is made in Kashmir. Koshur, the language of Kashmir, is usually written in Perso-Arabic script, although Sharada and Devanagari are also used.

Sanskrit is a language, mainly used for religious purposes. It can be written in various scripts.
Hindi is also a language which can be written in various scripts, usually a form of Devanagari, which is probably the script you were thinking of. Although Hindi and Urdu use different scripts, the speakers can understand each other.

My problem is if I found something that beautiful I'd have to keep it and not resell it. That's why I have five china cabinets. :(
