Who is the author of the portrait? What is the date? What country?

Why don't we start by you telling us what you know about them. In what part of the world did you find them and what were you told about them?

These portraits are in Russia. It is suggested that they may have been painted by the Dutch and that they are from the 17th century.
but I don't think they are that old?

Given one is signed with the surname Walter and dated 1872, I think that unlikely. (The inexpensive, modern frames do them no favors, by way.)

Is that’s a wax seal? Maybe marked as part of someone’s collection?

    Very nice paintings, SSlava.
I read 1672. The date may not be correct though, the script doesn't look 17th century to me.

IMHO the style looks 19th Cent to me (19th Cent homage to Rembrandt).Could the red seals be museum or import/export seals ?

The two sitters appear to be wearing academic gowns, one with an added bonnet.

The very first, at the top of the page, an' your example by Flinck, AJ, share a riveting feature: the right eye of the sitter is directly fixed on the viewer...an' is positioned on the canvas centrally on the horizontal, about a weak third of the vertical. These are an example, I'm sure, of some universally understood standard of portraiture...an' are obviously powerfully effective in producing the desired capture of our attention.
My experience is limited, my knowledge even less...but these are commanding, gimlet-eyed gazes...neither of those gentlemen are brooking any nonsense!

So is this an original from the 17th century or not?
Their clothes seem to be from the 17th century.

I know nothing about the true age of these paintings. But who
own such paintings and frame them in such cheap @ss looking crappy frames? That just doesn’t feel right or logical to me..
