    Okay, I'll start.

(I'm afraid my comment on the guidelines thread may have deterred people, for which I apologize! :()

I am hoping to find a new home for this charming postcard. I love the studio setting and that it looks like the children were enjoying themselves.

Here's what I know about it...

Postmarked Sept. 19, 1916, Bremen Germany
Sent to what looks like "Marta Lust" in Hastedt-Bremen
Has a German 7-1/2 (cent?) stamp
Publisher is "HB" or "BH" in a heart
Message is in German; I haven't tried translating it

The card was clearly created using a photograph and it has a matte surface, but I'm not sure it's a "real photo postcard" (RPPC). It wasn't printed using offset lithography... there are no dots... but there were other lithographic processes sometimes used in those days that didn't have dots.

The card has a bit of paper loss at the top of the image, a little soiling or ink in the bottom right area, and a small amount of edge and corner wear.

Postage + rigid envelope cost: $1.25

I love this image and hope someone else will, too! First come, first serve!

    You're very welcome!

This is fun... much, much more fun than selling on eBay! And I don't even have to put tracking on a small envelope! lol

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Pat, I have been told by postcard collectors in one of the Facebook groups that this type of card is indeed usually printed with a photographic process. I would not call them RPPCs because to me that indicates something different, the more casual and not really mass produced types. -- the reason I asked in the group on Facebook is that people, including myself, were showing postcards that were based on photos but printed with non-photographic processes. The name of the group is Vintage Photo Postcards, and I did not think that indicated they had to be printed with a photo process. But others did think they should be photos. And many of them are experts on printing and photo processes. They told me that the above type is a real photo, in most cases.

-- Too bad I didn't see your post first! But maybe next time. :banghead::happy:

Sorry, Fig... I know you like these kinds of images! I'm sure I'll offer similar things again. ;)

My guess is cards like this were printed using the photochrom process, which was developed in Switzerland and used from the 1880s through the 1960s. With photochroms, the items were printed using lithographic plates, but the plates themselves were created using photographic negatives so it is a semi-photographic process. I think I may have talked about this once on the AB in reference either to other postcards or prints, not sure.

Yes, you're right about RPPCs being different. They're literally regular photographs that have been turned into postcards by adding the dividing line, etc., on the back. I don't know what quantity was usually produced of any given RPPC card.

    Hi Fig,
I put in the will that this postcard goes to you. I wanted it since I have a cousin Marta that lives in the suburbs of Bremen and the blonde girl on the end looks like my sister.

Greg, do you really have a blonde cousin named "Marta" in the suburbs of Bremen? (My leg is ridiculously pullable sometimes, so I never know. )

Greg, since you didn't put lol in the above post about your will, can I assume that you ran to your attorney and changed your will at lightning speed? :playful::angelic:

Ah, I almost posted something like that, Fig!

Just think how the documentation will enhance the provenance for the card! :D
