Oooooh nooooooo!! Well, perhaps it being a very distinct collection, it will be recovered in time if he can get word to all local pawn, melt and jewelry shops. I can't imagine thieves will have much taste for that type of jewelry so much as the cash it brings...

They got just one tub of stuff, but it was one packed with smalls, such as rings, including the bracelet. It was clearly a planned operation, so imagine they immediately went to their gold scrapper. I was sick to my stomach when she told me about it, explaining why their stock was thinner than usual. Fortunately their insurance paid out without a problem. Learned that, for insurance companies, fine jewellery is considered art.

Beautifully carved! I like how even the colour of the stone has been used to create the final image. Do you think it was a private commission? Is it possible to be a famous contemporary person, composer or a poet for example?

I'd have had it into my car so fast I'd have been a blur! Some really elaborate D&E sells for $$$ even now. It's not my personal taste, but I don't mind selling it one bit.

Was just looking at him again & noticed the care taken with the shape of the bare head, not just a plain arc.

Possible, but not probable. Such cameo portraits were a popular souvenir of a visit to Rome. They were made predominantly of men, famous, and others presumably husbands, & presumably meant to be set as jewellery for the wife. Portraits of women are much less common.

Have put these links up a number of times, but maybe it doesn't hurt to post them again:

Yes, our insurance singles out jewelry, art and "collectables" as things that need separate policies. Which covers everything of value in my home! I don't understand that anyway. If I pay for X amount of coverage it shouldn't matter how I get to that sum! My parents had a fire and the only thing the insurance company requested a receipt for was a 4k electronic item. But they paid the full limit of what their home goods were covered for in the end! (My mother grabbed her fine jewelry, ha.)

That is horrible! I would be sick to my stomach. All of those beautiful pieces gone. So many people are pulling out the cameos to sell the gold for scrap, which is heartbreaking. The cameos usually are damaged or destroyed.

Hi everyone and apologies for intruding however I am struggling to find if I should start a thread or simply join in? I have a couple of cameos, one of which I like very much and is a pretty 15ct old brooch. However it is the ring that has me intrigued. Appears to be rose gold but not what you would call pretty. Is there a more appropriate place for me to post some photos and see what people think? I will show one pic of the ring here though if thats okay? She has a face a bit like a Dick Tracey cartoon! :) cameo ring face.jpg Many Thanks Steve

Join in, join in! It's fine if you would prefer to start your own thread, but you're not intruding in the least here. The idea of the thread is to have a community of cameo lovers sharing their knowledge & their own cameos. And to be a place to ask questions.

Now, is your question whether or not she looks like Dick Tracey? Seriously, she is not a very good cameo & I have a suspicion she may not have been original to what looks like a very pretty ring. Sorry if that's a bit harsh, but no point in misleading you about what you have.

Hope this doesn't put you off on showing the brooch. 'Very pretty' sounds more promising than 'intriguing' did. I'm just a :sour::cat: this time of day.

I'm seeing an opal in there. They can break, so possibly one met its maker and they replaced it with whatever would fit. A Jade oval would look the business too, if one turned up.

Thanks so much for the feedback everyone. The ring is unstamped but very pretty. I have never seen a cameo quite so 'ordinary' with 2 straignt lines for the face so wondered if anyone else has seen one like it? The ring shows zero sign of wear so maybe it was given as a present and immediately relegated to the jewellery box. :) cameo ring side3.jpg cameo ring side3.jpg
