has anyone any idea what these metal spheres are. they have been outside for at least 10 yaers or more and have got hardly any rust. The big sphere measures 34 cm wide and ways 1293 grams and is hollow and atracts a magnet. IMG_20241101_130701981.jpg IMG_20241101_130505313.jpg IMG_20241101_130709367.jpg

My guess would be stainless steel and used as ornaments in a flower bed. Can be referred to as "gazing spheres" or "gazing balls"

what strange is that they got use wear on one side and burn damage. and they seem far lo light for stainless steel an no rust after 10 years or more outside. the where bought as a curiosity by the previous owner and left outside but not as garden features.

    That is a bit strange.

I did a search on Amazon for stainless gazing spheres and saw a 12" / 30.48 cm one that only weighed 1.14 US pound / 517 grams. Another was a couple inches larger and weighed over 4 US pounds. So a lot of discrepancy, in terms of the weights. Dependent on thickness, and possibly to a lesser degree, the overall composition of the metal?

I would think a good quality stainless steel would not rust. My BBQ grill doesn't have any rust and it's 15 years and going strong!

    See what others think.

When I was googling I did see some for sale (new) somewhere in various sizes that said aluminum I think. (I think from China.)

I always hesitate to put links to Chinese sites.

that makes sence, but i noticed that the garden spheres have no seam and al polished up. my spheres defently got use wear but why i don´t know and there is a seam on them. The wear is the same as on the betz sphere, see youtube.

I've got one...been inna weather 5-6 years since I found it, in someone's garden. Nary a hint of rust or any other blemish. I think it's seamless. I'll post a pic when the rain clears...

Here's mine...~8" diameter, ~15 oz, very slightly magnetic, made in half-spheres an' joined...it has a faintly visible circumferential seam (pic 3); it's almost certainly made from a stainless steel alloy.
I believe the valve check-ball reply is accurate.
