I am wondering a if anyone could tell me something about this Satsuma Platter. I know its Japanese in origin and antique - but do not know the precise age of it. There is a mark on the reverse of the platter, but I didn't take a photo of it. Does anyone know what the "story" is behind subject of this artwork?

I am linking to the platter because I think my jpeg is too big to post in this thread. https://www.antiquers.com/media/satsuma-platter.12243/

Hello, @Skans & welcome to the forum!!:happy:

You are going to need to upload a photo of the back as well as close-ups of the mark on the back & a close-up photo of the main figure.

The backs of pottery & porcelain pieces can tell you a great deal even when there are no marks.

Japanese marks can be tricky as they have been faked for years.

A close-up of the main figure may be able to tell if it is hand-painted or a transfer print.

Thanks everyone for the feedback - I am certain that it is hand painted and antique - my guess would be around 1900+/-; it could be older but that's something I don't know. Definitely not a transfer print. It's been in my family for over 30 years and I've inspected it under magnification. Yes, I thought I had a photo of the mark on the back - I will try to take a photo and post it. I did find a website that had many Satsuma marks to compare and I couldn't find one to match.

The man is holding a frog - I have read the Japanese folklore about the two traveling frogs, and that frogs are generally thought of as "good luck" or good fortune, but have not found anything about a frog interacting with a human.

With that decoration, I'm thinking 19teens/20s. The photo of your mark needs to be rotated 45 degrees to the right. You might find it at gotheborg.com under Japanese marks.

Thanks for the suggestion. I got on that site to see if any look familiar, but I couldn't find the same mark.

Once it's rotated clockwise, the two middle characters say Kutani. Check out Gama Sennin, the toad hermit.
