And she has got a Venus knot. Lovely piece. Since this is the topic of discussion in another thread: do you ever wear her? She has one of those little clasps that can be too loose to stay closed, but a nice swiveling bail for wear as a pendant.

I do occasionally wear my cameos but not often, I don't think I've worn this one before. When I do wear my old ones, I usually add one of those soft plastic earring backs to the pin to make sure it doesn't fall off, should the clasp come open.
Where is the topic of wearing cameos being discussed?

    It's not specifically about cameos:

Interesting. Were the scarabs & cameos evaluated as Roman glass? Would sure love to be able to examine it while holding in my own hands. Did they mention that the cross depicts/refers to Cupid & Psyche?

Is this a range of estimated value or what guest paid vs appraised value?

Sorry I was concentrating on getting good pics to remember all what she said. I can’t remember if the lady expert said anything about Roman glass I recall hearing the word amethyst though and assumed they were mainly stones/gems rather than glass.. She did mention Cupid and Psyche I think and the lions head, dog and dolphin, she was mainly talking about the love symbolism of the necklace.
    Auction value today £3-4K.

It would probably be described as red jasper. Jasper is a catchall term for opaque microcrystalline quartz. If it's translucent then it's called chalcedony. The scarabs could all be stone, or even a mix of stone & glass, as glass was a luxury good.

I have not seen micro mosaic tesserae used this way before either. Very inventive on the part of someone. Too bad the cameo figure is not a bit better.

JMHO but I think it would be more successful if the figure were higher. The tesserae is higher than the edges of the figure.

The frame however is to die for!!!!!!!

NICE! The glasswork on this one is spectacular and the cameo is really good. Diana?

You know, I've always thought of her as Diana, but as I look at her now, I think a better argument could be made for Night. I love the hoop earrings & the man in the moon companion.

The frame, which is an easel, is marked FAP for Fabbrica Angelo Pessar. This shows what the frame looks like from other sides:

The frame back is standard for some old Italian brass ones. With a few minor changes they still did them that way in the 80s. Maybe even later.
