I feel very strongly that I have image searched a very similar scene in my past, possibly from a post on antiquers, but can not figure out when. This appears to be a very common scenic painting with variations. The photos are from the auction house and I will pick up Thursday. For less then a cup of coffee I bid more by reflex of its familiarity then want. Listed as a Dutch oil painting only. Including frame 32”X24” the auction was about 90% of 1003 items being German.

‘can the location be id’ed or is it a generic painting? Any thoughts on possible Artist or in the style of?

    thanks to all….:)

Could be in a 1970s frame, but I do not know the scene.

If you list it, better not call it a Dutch scene. The buildings seem to be a mishmash of Central European styles, as well as North German.
    I would call it German.

The seller probably thought that anything with a tower windmill is Dutch, but Northern Germany had a few of those as well, just not as high as some of the Dutch ones.

The Kaufman version might have been seen a Dutch scene, as it was signed L. van Hove.
Text from the site I mentioned (and with the help of Google Translate):
"He travelled many times, including to: Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, which were the inspiration to create numerous landscapes, including an extraordinary number of views of Venice. Since 1900, Karl Kaufmann settled permanently in Vienna.
The painter worked under many pseudonyms: [...] He used the pseudonym L. van Howe especially when he painted Dutch places.

That one is also a mishmash of styles, mostly German/Central European. The towers don't look Dutch, and neither does the type of tower windmill. Timber frame houses are only found in rural parts of South Limburg, the southeastern panhandle of the Netherlands, not in coastal or riverside towns.
The spires in the distance could be Dutch, but the one closer to the foreground looks more like it is in Hamburg or thereabouts.
I think either he traveled too much and got everything mixed up, or he viewed the world through a Central European lens.:playful:

He painted it along the way during his journeys. Started painting one building in the first town, then the next building in the following town, etc. It's an entire photo album of a trip through Europe brought together in a single painting.

duly noted, and very much appreciated for the information. :D:kiss:(Why can’t I send a thank you kiss without lipstick.)

‘thank you for that info. For some reason I couldn’t get the page translated. After some comparison of Kaufman’s(beautiful) and the one I will get tomorrow, while I feel my Artist did have a skill set I find the perspective of the main building being thinner at the bottom and wider at the top is not consistent with the others buildings. This doesn’t occur in Kaufman’s. Well that and the balcony appears pitching upward as noted in this photo. YIKES! I try to think of it being a small drawbridge for boarding boats but just cant see it. :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:

Hope to see better detail when I pick it up but for five dollars a good buy imo.

OT: I also bought another oil from the same auction and id’ed it as a well known Austrian scene done by many including Adolf Hitter in the 20’s. Mine is signed and dated 1948. In this link the one on the left is actually mine.

    It certainly is.
It could have been built in a time and place when and where ground floor space was taxed. You see the result of that tax in some European towns, where houses suddenly 'bulge out' on the upper stories.
There is an odd twist in the building though. It may have collapsed shortly after it was painted.:nailbiting:
But you did well for $5, and I'm sure the old world charm will attract buyers.:)

The language option of the site didn't translate the description. Had to right click on the page and select 'translate to English'

Here's a thread discussing that scene

Possibly all based on this one

‘here is the one that applies to my earlier post of origin. Possibly the reason for multiple interest from other painters post WWII. Scroll down about 50% and click on picture for a detailed view. Again mine is dated 1948(can’t make out the sig).
